Position Summary/Purpose of Position:
The program coordinator for Veteran Student Life provides leadership for the University of Maryland outreach and services for Veterans and military affiliated students including working to ensure student success, retention, degree completion, and their continued development as engaged leaders. The Coordinator designs all initiatives through a strengths-based framework. This coordinator is often seen as an expert in the needs and experiences of UMD’s Veteran and military affiliated students. This position supervises a team of undergraduate students to advance community, services and programs for Veterans and military affiliated students, engages alumni, assists in development efforts to support programs and scholarships. This position also provides advising to the Veteran student organization, TERPVETS, and advocates for student Veterans and service members across campus and beyond. The coordinator is a representative of the program at the campus, state, and national level. The Coordinator serves as a point of contact for veteran and military affiliated students navigating a large Research I institution. The Coordinator manages services for Veterans through the annual Veterans orientation, STEM tutoring program, the Battle Buddies mental health leadership program, the annual donor and scholar reception, and ongoing programming that supports the holistic welfare of students throughout the year. This position is also accountable for a variety of administrative responsibilities including but not limited to running scholarship processes for over 60 Veteran scholarships, the management of program budgets, timesheets and hiring paperwork, purchasing, marketing and outreach, managing students, student processes, and program assessment.

Minimum Qualifications:
Education:
A bachelor’s degree is required.
Experience:
Minimum of two years’ full-time experience and direct experience working with Veterans to enhance services, leadership programs and student organization advising. Transferable experiences are acceptable.

Knowledge, Skills, & Experience:

  • Candidates should have knowledge of adult development theory, and a developed understanding of military culture and how it can be translated in the education environment.
  • Candidates should demonstrate excellent oral and written communication skills, strong interpersonal and decision-making skills, and high personal performance standards.
  • This person must demonstrate effectiveness in working with Veteran and Service Member students and colleagues as an educator, advocate, advisor and leader, and effectiveness working with a diverse student body and work environment.

  • Master’s degree is preferred.
  • There is a strong preference for active duty or Veteran applicants.
  • The ideal candidate is an organized and detail-oriented planner, will have experience with student development, student organization advising, event planning, fiscal management, fundraising, personnel management, and supervision of a diverse staff.

Physical Demands
Work takes place in both an office environment and in on-campus buildings; will require ability to travel throughout campus. There may be occasions when the incumbent will need to work outside their normal work shift to accommodate other shifts that exist in the organization for purposes of meetings, training, etc.
