Housed in the Institute for European, Russian, and Eurasian Studies (IERES) at the George Washington University’s Elliott School of International Affairs, the Program Associate, PONARS Eurasia provides coordination and program management on behalf of PONARS Eurasia . The Program Associate works closely with IERES staff and Elliott School colleagues in support of the research, grant management, and programmatic goals of the PONARS Eurasia program. The position reports to the Directors of PONARS Eurasia and the IERES Research Program Manager under limited supervision. PONARS Eurasia is a network of over 100 scholars based mainly in the United States, Russia, Ukraine, and other post-Soviet states. The network addresses a comprehensive array of important foreign, security, and domestic policy challenges related to Russia and post-Soviet Eurasia and their environs.
The Program Associate will serve as a point of contact and provide functional support for the program administration. Functional support could include answering most inquiries, managing web presence and some marketing efforts, drafting program materials, planning and executing events, tracking spending and processing payments, preparing and analyzing reports, and similar duties. May make recommendations to policy and procedure. The Program Associate is responsible for communicating with other GW stakeholders in order to assist in maintaining standard operational efficiencies.
Key Responsibilities Include:
  • Budget Support: Manages and tracks spending of PONARS Eurasia funds to ensure compliance with university and sponsor policies. Processes reimbursements, purchase orders, and invoices. Supports grant management process. Manages all program P-card expenses through iBuy. Assists project directors with grant proposals and budget development, budget tracking, and close-out procedures.
  • Events: Plan and execute PONARS Eurasia events, including coordinating with speakers, and external vendors such as caterers, reserving event space, and managing day-of logistics.
  • Media Production: Oversees production of the PONARS Eurasia online academy video series and the podcast series. Promote them on social media.
  • Outreach and Communications: Manages PONARS Eurasia’s presence online, including the program website and social media platforms, maintaining PONARS Eurasia branding, and interacting with followers in order to grow audiences. Edit/draft the Monday Take, PONARS newsletter.
  • Policy Maintenance/Editing: Manage the editing process of all PONARS policy memos. Draft various texts (announcements of events or other programming, summaries of the contents of presentations made at events and workshops, and materials for the website), and assist project directors with writing interim and final reports.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned. The omission of specific duties does not preclude the supervisor from assigning duties that are logically related to the position.

This is a hybrid position with some days remote and some days in the office.
Minimum Qualifications:

Qualified candidates will hold a Bachelor’s degree in an appropriate area of specialization. Degree must be conferred by the start date of the position. Degree requirements may be substituted with an equivalent combination of education, training and experience.

  • Experience with event planning and logistics, both in-person as well as online.
  • Experience with tracking expenses and grant support.
  • Experience with internal and external communications including social media and newsletter content.
  • Highly motivated individual requiring little supervision.
  • Interest in international affairs research and education is a plus.
Typical Hiring Range $51,455.52 - $70,708.76 How is pay for new employees determined at GW?
