The Department of Mechanical Engineering at the University of South Carolina (USC) in Columbia is seeking qualified applicants for Tenured and Tenure-Track faculty positions at all levels to support its initiative in Industrial Engineering
Applicants for the Assistant Professor rank must possess a PhD degree in Mechanical, Industrial or Manufacturing engineering by the start date of employment, a demonstrated record of research accomplishments, and an outstanding capacity for teaching undergraduate and graduate courses. Applicants for the ranks of Associate Professor and Full Professor must also have years of relevant academic experience commensurate with academic policy, plus a strong, sustained record of excellence in teaching and research, including competitive funding and interdisciplinary collaborations. Candidates with a strong vision for Industrial Engineering education are highly encouraged to apply. Successful candidates will be expected to develop internationally recognized, externally funded research programs in cutting edge areas of industrial engineering. We seek outstanding candidates with a background in Industrial Engineering, Smart Manufacturing, Data Analytics and Machine Learning in Manufacturing, Manufacturing Entrepreneurship, Engineering Management, and Supply Networks with a strong publication and research record as well as international reputation in the field. A strong research portfolio with a track record of federally funded projects from a variety of agencies such as NSF, NIST, DoE, DoD is required. The ideal candidate has a track record of serving the profession as associate editor, editorial board member, scientific/program committee member, and other leadership positions in academic and professional societies. Additional qualifications such as industry experience are a plus. The candidate must show a track record of successfully and effectively teaching a variety of courses for undergraduate and graduate students in industrial engineering, i.e., manufacturing, product development, supply chain, ergonomics, and smart manufacturing. Evidence of additional educational activities, such as the development of new courses or curriculum, educational centered projects, or development of educational materials (e.g., textbooks, online resources) are expected. Experience with ABET accreditation in Industrial Engineering programs is a plus. A successful track record of and interested in working with industry and startups is a plus.
The successful candidates must have the ability to (1) teach and develop Industrial Engineering curriculum (including lecture, laboratory, or design courses) at both the undergraduate and graduate levels, (2) develop and sustain an independent, nationally recognized research program, (3) collaborate within multi-disciplinary teams of faculty and other researchers across colleges and institutions, and (4) be engaged in professional activities. Candidates must have an outstanding record of teaching, research, and service.
USC is designated as a “high research and high service activity” university by the Carnegie Foundation. The department has six endowed chairs, 35 full-time faculty, with undergraduate enrollment of over 900 students, graduate enrollment of over 150 students, and over $10 million in research expenditures last year.
