The University of Vermont invites applications for a faculty member at the rank of a Professor to serve as Chair of the Department of Physics with a starting date of August 19, 2024. The University of Vermont is the principal research institution in Vermont. Applicants must have a Ph.D. in physics or a closely related field, an active high-impact research program, and a record of teaching excellence at the undergraduate and graduate levels. This chair appointment and professorship brings a dedicated research budget and one prospective tenure-track recruitment in academic-year 2025-26 to ensure the growth and shape the future of the department. Additionally, qualified applicants may apply for an endowed professorship.
We seek highly motivated individuals who demonstrate proven leadership at the department level and who will grow their successful, externally funded research programs with strong collaborative spirit. The successful candidate is expected to contribute to teaching at undergraduate and graduate physics levels, advise undergraduate majors, supervise physics PhD students, and commit to academic service. Salary and start-up will be competitive and commensurate with qualifications. Candidates from all fields of physics synergistic with our current strengths in condensed matter physics and biophysics, or with potential to expand our department expertise to benefit our students and interdisciplinary programs are strongly encouraged to apply.
UVM is especially interested in candidates who can contribute to the diversity and inclusive excellence of the academic community through their teaching, service and research, scholarship, or creative arts. We are an educationally purposeful community seeking to prepare students to be accountable leaders in a diverse and changing world. Members of the UVM community embrace and advance the values of Our Common Ground: Openness, Respect, Responsibility, Integrity, Innovation, and Justice. The successful candidate will demonstrate a strong commitment to the ideals of accessibility, inclusiveness, and academic excellence as reflected in the tenets of Our Common Ground. To that end, candidates must provide a diversity impact statement as part of the application detailing how they will further the diversity of the unit through their teaching and service at the University.

All qualified applicants will receive consideration for employment without regard to race, color, religion, sex, sexual orientation, gender identity, national origin, disability, protected veteran status, or any other category legally protected by federal or state law.
The University of Vermont, established in 1791, is a comprehensive research university with a current enrollment of 12,000+ undergraduate, graduate, and medical students.
