Job Description

The College of Science (COS) at Texas A&M University-Corpus Christi (TAMU-CC) invites applications for the position of Department Chair in the Department of Life Sciences (LSCI) to begin as early as spring 2024. This faculty position is at the rank of Full Professor with a recommendation for tenure pending approval from the Texas A&M System Board of Regents. The COS seeks a servant leader, with proven guidance and management skills, and an outstanding academic background in the biological sciences. The Department Chair will provide the highest quality strategic, academic, and administrative leadership to one of the campus's most diverse and productive academic units. Specifically, the chair will play a vital role in ensuring the continued success and growth of the existing PhD, MS and BS programs, as well as the development of new programs within the department.

LSCI has 23 full-time tenured or tenure-track faculty, five professional track faculty, and over 1,200 science majors (including undergraduate and graduate students) offering B.S. degrees in Biology and Biomedical Science, M.S. degrees in Biology, Marine Biology and Fisheries and Mariculture, and a Ph.D. in Marine Biology. During the last three years, the department’s research activities have resulted in an annual average of 20 grants (mostly federal agencies including NSF and NIH) with research expenditures in the range of $3,000,000.

The Department of Life Sciences is housed in the newest building on campus, Tidal Hall, with:

  • 108,000 Gross Square Feet / 65,000 Usable Square Feet

  • 3 floors plus a machinery floor on the roof

  • 63,640 square foot general research labs plus support rooms

  • 9 teaching labs, including 3 BSL2 teaching labs.

  • 44 Faculty/Staff offices

  • Desk areas for both graduate students and post-docs

The new chair of LSCI is expected to bring a broad vision and an external perspective to help COS, promote interdisciplinary scholarship, increase research expenditures, promote student success, increase enrollment and retention, promote excellence in teaching and research and service, develop community engagement initiatives to deepen relationships and trust between TAMU-CC and our communities, and build partnerships with industries.

Duties and Responsibilities:
The Chair reports to the Dean of the College of Science and is a member of the College of Science leadership team. The responsibilities of the Chair include but are not limited to the following:Provide visionary, strategic leadership to advance the Department.

  • Recruit, retain, supervise, mentor, and evaluate faculty.

  • Recruit students and promote the growth of both the undergraduate and graduate programs.

  • Provide leadership in working with diverse student bodies including nontraditional students.

  • Manage department budget and resources.

  • Continue developing a large, thriving, diverse faculty and staff and foster a collaborative and collegial work environment.

  • Guide curriculum development.

  • Identify and seek external funds for the department.

  • Promote the department within the university and to the broader community.

  • Provide leadership to complete the annual assessment of program and student learning outcomes.

The College of Science at TAMU-CC offers degrees across three departments: Life Sciences, Mathematics and Statistics, and Physical and Environmental Sciences. The COS faculty and staff bridge academics and research through interdisciplinary collaborations in classrooms, laboratories, and the field to create a more sustainable world. With approximately 1,650 students, including 1,450 undergraduate and 165 graduate students, COS consists of 75 full-time faculty (54 tenured/tenure-line and 21 professional-track faculty/instructors) and 45 staff members (including postdocs and research staff) dedicated to excellence in both teaching and research. The college's FY22 research funding was nearly $9 million.

Required Qualifications:

  • A Ph.D. in Biology or a related field

  • A academic record of achievement in scholarship appropriate for an appointment with tenure at the rank of Professor

  • An active externally funded research program

  • Experience mentoring graduate and undergraduate students, junior faculty, and tenured faculty.

  • Demonstrated administrative experience and the ability to oversee curriculum development and innovation, communicate clearly, and lead collaboratively.
