The Department of Chemistry is seeking applicants for a part-time Professional Research Assistant position. The purpose for the position is to assist a laboratory in the Department of Chemistry to reach project goals.

Applicants must have experience in organic synthesis, particularly in synthesis of nucleosides and nucleotides is necessary.  This includes proficiency in NMR, IR, UV-vis, and MS.  The applicant should also have experience in handling of oligonucleotides of DNA and RNA, i.e., purification, chemical synthesis, and characterization.

Nature of Work
This part-time, Professional Research Assistant position will be responsible for general laboratory duties and maintenance, assisting to reach laboratory and grant goals, training and overseeing group members, and writing/updating protocols for documenting techniques.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Chemical synthesis, mainly in nucleic acid chemistry.
  • Characterization of nucleosides, nucleotides, and oligonucleotides.
  • Purification of oligonucleotides of RNA and DNA
  • Radiolabeling of oligonucleotides of RNA and DNA
  • Maintenance duties that include, but are not limited to, maintaining a clean environment, troubleshooting of instrumentation, training/supervising other group members, 
  • The Professional Research Assistant will supervise undergraduate student workers.

Qualifications

 

Minimum Qualifications:

·         A bachelor of science degree in chemistry or related field is required. 

·         Experience in the field of nucleic acid chemistry is required.

 

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

·         Strong and clear communication skills.

·         Experience with NMR and X-ray of nucleic acids.

·         Must be self-motivated and self-directed.

·         Highly organized and reliable.

·         Ability to work autonomously for the majority of projects is an important aspect of the job.

·         Ability to multi-task and manage competing priorities. 

·         Knowledge of organic chemistry and biochemistry of nucleic acids are assets for the position.  

·         Comfortable working in a collaborative environment and self-driven.

·         A positive, helpful, and mature personality is key to be successful in this position. 

The starting salary range (or hiring range) for this position has been established at $10,000 to $14,000.

The above salary range (or hiring range) represents the University’s good faith and reasonable estimate of the range of possible compensation at the time of posting. This position is not eligible for overtime compensation unless it is non-exempt.
