Black Hills State University is seeking a self-motivated and dynamic individual to serve as Professional Advisor at the Black Hills State University-Rapid City campus. This position serves as official of-record academic advisor to a caseload of students from first year through graduation. The position will support activities to enhance academic success, retention, learning, and development of students. This position requires the ability to multitask in a busy environment with frequent interruptions, flexibility, a positive attitude, and an ability to learn quickly and work with diverse others. This is a 12-month, benefit-eligible position.
 
 RESPONSIBILITIES:
  • Advise a caseload of BHRC and online students on matters including transitioning to college, registration, major selection, schedule and grad plan development, personal support, goal setting, curricular & co-curricular engagement, professional and graduation preparation, etc.
  • Provide guidance and personal support to students with high need; conduct early alert outreach and academic support & recovery services.
  • Refer to and provide information about support services such as disability services, tutoring, counseling, career services, and community organizations.
  • Provide initial assistance and liaise with admissions, academic programs, financial aid, registrar, cashier, and numerous other resource offices located on the Spearfish campus; collaborate with these areas to improve student services.
  • Support student retention efforts at BHSU-RC as well as occasional targeted recruitment activities.
  • Accurately communicate University policies and procedures.
  • Maintain ongoing contact with advisees.
  • Maintain detailed records of interactions with advisees.
  • Deliver presentations about academic advising in classrooms, events, and other settings.
  • Advocate for students at Black Hills State University-Rapid City.
  • Create and/or execute programming related to student retention at BHRC.
  • Act as member of the Student Success Center team, assisting with summer orientation and overall student success efforts.

 MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
  • A bachelor’s degree in any related field is required
  • Effective written and verbal communication skills, including active listening
  • High level of self-direction and professionalism
  • Strong interpersonal skills
  • Ability to work with and relate to a wide range of individuals, including college students
  • Flexible, adaptive, and positive working style

 PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
  • Master’s degree in counseling, student development, higher education, or related field is preferred
  • Experience working with a diverse population of undergraduate college students, especially post-traditional and first generation populations
  • Knowledge of activities designed to enhance student success and retention
  • Knowledge of student development/learning theory
  • Strong understanding of University environment and operation

 This position requires that the employee communicate effectively with multiple constituents both verbally, on the phone, and in writing and be able to hold appointments both virtually and in-person with advisees and colleagues. The advisor will need to be competent in giving presentations, providing reports, and maintaining various forms of documentation. Constituents must be able to understand the message and the employee must deliver effectively. Occasional travel to the Spearfish campus will be required.
