Who We Are


What You Will Do

Cornell's Center for Regional Economic Advancement in the Research and Innovation Office, fuels economic growth and diversity through entrepreneurship and innovation programs. Our Hardware Accelerators, based at Rev: Ithaca Startup Works, support every kind of startup, across all fields and we are proud to offer a collection of programs and services specifically aimed at helping hardware and physical product startups launch and grow.


As a Product Development Engineer, you will leverage your deep technical knowledge to help entrepreneurs develop early prototypes and transition to manufacturing. You will work with early-stage entrepreneurs to help them develop the skills necessary for them to build physical products and prototypes. Additionally, you will work closely with the Assistant Director and team of hardware instructors in the design and develop of products for entrepreneurs in our programs.


The Product Development Engineer has the responsibilities such as but not limited to:

  • Work with the Assistant Director to determine project/product scope, architecture, and key challenges for entrepreneurs (program participants) and their prototypes
  • Conduct design reviews and assist entrepreneurs (program participants) in prototype fabrication and evaluation
  • Coordinate the progress of engineering deliverables for entrepreneurs (program participants), towards agreed-upon deliverables
  • Manage and ensure the day-to-day readiness in our purpose-built prototyping shop capabilities to best facilitate concept-to-production transitions, with regard to industry and manufacturing best practices
  • Assist the Assistant Director with the innovative design, planning, and implementation of new and existing hardware accelerators
  • Assist with program(s) recruitment and evaluation
  • May support the hiring and training of interns (hardware instructors)

Campus Collaboration: Entrepreneurship programs supported and run by the Center for Regional Economic Advancement requires our team to work with people and departments across Cornell and organization outside of the university, depending on the scope of role.

What We Need

  • Bachelor's degree with at least 2-4 years of industry experience or equivalent combination of education and experience
  • Ability to manage multiple projects and tasks at any given time, to work independently, and to make decisions that can significantly impact the University and projects
  • Proficiency in networking and communicating with a diverse population of groups and individuals;
  • Ability to draft various correspondence, reports, presentations, etc.
  • Experience in managing complex projects and priorities within a matrixed work environment; keen attention to detail and flexibility is critical

What We Prefer

  • Additionally, we would like to see evidence of: Masters degree in engineering or equivalent area of study
  • Knowledge of mechanical and/or electronic prototyping
  • Experience with the product development process from concept to manufacture
