Purpose


The Departments of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences and Neurology seek a Principal Data Engineer to develop, implement, and maintain software for the collection, analysis, reporting, and presentation of data. This position will support projects across multiple grants. This person will collaborate closely with health care providers, researchers, faculty, data analysts, IT staff, and team members to build robust custom application projects. The ideal candidate is hands-on and highly capable of taking initiative for designing, prototyping, implementing, and providing long term support by effectively incorporating user and stakeholder input, and handling projects from database to application layer to effective UI.


Responsibilities

  • Work with multiple stakeholders to develop detailed designs to meet goals for research data needs, utilizing a unique blend of clinical insight and technical prowess. Collaborate with department teams to create secure, reliable, scalable solutions using a lean and agile approach. Work with others on the team for managing integration with servers and environments including account creation, security, application deployment, and script creation.

  • Develop/support pipelines for the secure automated extract, transform, and load of data from sources to data warehouses. Develop views, computation algorithms, and integration code to support dynamic data visualizations, dashboards, and data products.

  • Develop tools for ongoing data capture, curation, and validation to ensure data accuracy and consistency. Manage data versioning, maintaining snapshots and documentation for backups and data reproducibility.

  • Work with researchers and interdisciplinary team to develop data analysis and visualization products that empower end users to extract valuable insights while ensuring the security of both identified and deidentified data.

  • Develop robust documentation for data processes, data dictionaries, management, etc.

  • Other related duties as assigned.


Required Qualifications

Bachelor's degree with at least 5 years of relevant experience in software development, data engineering, system administration, production experience, or related field. Knowledgeable in software development on complex systems and at least 2 computer programming languages. Demonstrated ability to design, debug, and test complex code in at least one data-focused scripting language (Python plus one other such as R). Possess a broad and deep knowledge of data software development and infrastructure (microservices, operating system configuration and scripting) in both on-prem and cloud environments. Experience writing and optimizing complex SQL queries for data extraction utilizing both database clients and command line scripting. An understanding of database architecture, data normalization, data security, and scaling/performance principles. Experience in handling sensitive data, such as Protected Health Information (PHI), while adhering to HIPAA, FERPA, Common Rule, and other regulations within higher education and/or healthcare. Relevant education and experience may be substituted as appropriate.



Preferred Qualifications

Bachelor's degree with more than 5 years of relevant experience in software development, system administration, production experience, or related field. Experience and/or desire to work with medical data with an understanding of regulatory requirements and security measures for handling sensitive data, such as Protected Health Information (PHI), while adhering to HIPAA, FERPA, Common Rule, and other regulations within higher education and/or healthcare. (The candidate will need to pass CITI certification tests on this topic for access to the data we handle). Experience with REDCap, clinical or other data systems in a clinical setting is preferred. PostgreSQL and experience with 2 or more database architectures is preferred. Experience with other data query languages in addition to SQL such as GraphQL. Experience with AWS (Amazon Web Service) data platform. Collaborative software development experience using python and python libraries in a distributed cloud-based or enterprise environment. Experience with software versioning systems, integration and ETL pipelines, and APIs. Commitment to collaborative documentation and sharing of code. UI design and development experience: interactive data-driven webpages, web applications, dashboards utilizing tools such as html, css, JavaScript, Django, React, Node.js, AngularJS, and D3.js. Experience working with end-users to design, prototype, and maintain interactive websites. Skills implementing and supporting data science and data visualization: Matlab, R, pandas, Jupyter notebooks, tableau, other analysis and visualization tools/libraries. Demonstrated levels of creativity and ingenuity in prior projects.


Salary Range

$90,000+ depending on qualifications


Working Conditions

  • Repetitive use of a keyboard at a workstation.
