We are seeking a highly skilled Principal Data Architect with cutting-edge data engineering experience to lead the design and implementation of cloud analytics solutions utilizing novel tools like Microsoft Fabric, Azure Data Factory, Databricks, and Amazon Redshift, Google BigQuery, Snowflake, and Apache. The goal is to evolve the current SQL Server and cloud databases into a state-of-the-art data HIPAA secure platform to meet organizational strategic and tactical needs for the next decade. This strategic role is essential in developing a modular, integrated, and real-time infrastructure designed to support the growing array of analytical and data science tools while ensuring data integrity through efficient cleansing, transformation, storage, and monitoring processes.

As a Principal Data Architect (Clinical Informatics Specialist 5), this individual will regularly lead organization-critical data initiatives, including approaches and managing policies, workflows, and assets. This role is responsible for initiating, organizing, and directing wide-ranging projects across technical and operational departments aimed at achieving objectives and targets in clinical and operational information management. This includes advanced measurements and data analysis to deliver precise, dependable information for strategic decision-making.

The Principal Data Architect will also assess anticipated needs of the organization and align the needs into an extensible architecture. This also includes assessing the technology roadmaps of critical data vendors (e.g., Epic, AWS, Azure, etc.) and developing plans to align our architectural roadmap with theirs. This role will also closely liaise with UC San Diego Health technology vendors to co-design, co-develop, pilot, and evaluate new data technology products. This position is pivotal in ensuring that our current and future data architecture supports our strategic objectives by providing a foundation for advanced analytics across the organization.

Key Responsibilities:

Lead the Evolution of Data Platforms: Spearhead the design and implementation of cloud analytics solutions utilizing tools like Microsoft Fabric, Azure Data Factory, Databricks, Amazon Redshift, Google BigQuery, Snowflake, and Apache to evolve SQL Server and cloud databases into a state-of-the-art, HIPAA-secure data platform.

Architectural Design and Integration: Architect and build a versatile, integrated, and real-time data platform, ensuring modular infrastructure supports an array of analytical and data science tools. This includes ensuring data integrity through efficient cleansing, transformation, storage, and monitoring processes.

Strategic Initiatives and Analytics Vision: Lead organization-critical data initiatives to meet strategic and tactical needs, including the deployment of Microsoft Fabric for seamless data management and utilizing advanced measurements and data analysis for strategic decision-making.

Interdepartmental Collaboration and Leadership: Initiate, organize, and direct wide-ranging projects across technical and operational departments, serving as a key liaison with the Enterprise Systems and Data Integration team, application teams, and operational/nursing/physician leaders, while closely liaising with UC San Diego Health technology vendors.

Technology Assessment and Roadmap Alignment: Assess the technology roadmaps of critical data vendors and develop plans to align the architectural roadmap with theirs. Implement, manage, and automate database code deployment from GitHub.

Ensure Efficient Data Storage and Optimization: Guarantee efficient data storage by prioritizing data cleanliness and optimized transformation for analytical uses in various forms, including relational databases for structured data, dimensional models (such as cubes and slicers) for exploratory analysis, and ultra-wide formats to facilitate machine learning and artificial intelligence applications.

Data Platform Support and Optimization: Drive initiatives to support various data types and structures, guarantee efficient data storage, and ensure solutions exhibit high levels of performance, security, scalability, and reliability.

Collaboration and Requirement Gathering: Collaborate with cross-functional teams to refine data objects and deliver actionable insights, optimizing effective use of systems with Executive leaders and clinicians across all hospital/healthcare departments.

Analytics and Reporting Expertise: Develop and implement sophisticated quality assurance testing, design metrics and analytics for system modifications, and run SQL queries for enhanced data access.

  • Eleven (11) years of related experience, education/training, OR a Bachelor’s degree in related area plus seven (7) years of related experience/training.
  • Advanced Technical Skills: Organization expert in enterprise analytics solutions, including real-time analytics, data lakes, business intelligence, data engineering, and data integration. Expertise in designing and building scalable data platforms for situations without any reference architecture.
  • Cloud and Database Expertise: Expert experience in cloud database and analytics modeling with Azure or AWS, and a high level of proficiency in SQL programming, including creating views, stored procedures/automation, SSIS, and SSAS.
  • Regulatory Compliance and Security: Knowledge of data storage architectures and strong understanding of data cleansing, transformation, and storage techniques for analytical purposes. Ensure data integrity and compliance with regulatory standards.
  • Collaboration and Leadership: Comfortable working on a highly collaborative team with operations and technical resources. Proven expertise in mentoring team members, offering guidance on architectural frameworks, delivering technical insights, and coordinating technical resources efficiently.
  • Epic Data Systems Knowledge: Certification, knowledge, and experience working with EPIC data, especially Caboodle and Clarity, with expertise in tools like Reporting Workbench, Radar, Clarity, SQL, and Tableau.
  • Innovation and Strategic Planning: Ability to initiate strategic projects, including data governance standards and overall data architecture design. Implement metadata standards and lead analytics efforts by developing advanced analytics and data science capabilities.
  • Expertise in SQL and Database Optimization: Possesses the ability to develop custom notebooks, stored procedures, functions, tables, and indexes, with a strong focus on SQL performance tuning and optimization.
  • Must be able to work various hours and locations based on business needs.

Pay Transparency Act

Annual Full Pay Range: $112,100 - $216,500 (will be prorated if the appointment percentage is less than 100%)

Hourly Equivalent: $53.69 - $103.69

Factors in determining the appropriate compensation for a role include experience, skills, knowledge, abilities, education, licensure and certifications, and other business and organizational needs. The Hiring Pay Scale referenced in the job posting is the budgeted salary or hourly range that the University reasonably expects to pay for this position. The Annual Full Pay Range may be broader than what the University anticipates to pay for this position, based on internal equity, budget, and collective bargaining agreements (when applicable).
