The Preceptor in Chemistry is responsible for two courses. The fall semester course focuses on traditional organic chemistry and has a discussion section component that the preceptor will oversee. The spring semester course is about the organic chemistry of living systems has both a discussion section and laboratory component; the preceptor oversees both of these components. These courses each have enrollments between 200-300 students. The work of the preceptor entails: (1) overseeing course administration including the supervision and training a large teaching fellow staff; (2) acting as primary liaison between instructional staff and laboratory support group; (3) working with faculty to prepare problem sets and written examinations and to develop innovative instructional materials; and (4) teaching weekly review lectures. The Preceptor will also have the opportunity to instruct in the teaching practicum for first year graduate students.
The successful applicant should hold a graduate degree in chemistry or closely allied field and have experience with teaching science.
Superior organizational, written, and interpersonal communication skills. A strong doctoral record in chemistry is preferred. Experience teaching organic chemistry and/or biologically related chemistry. Experience in designing assessments and laboratory exercises.
