Position Description

Harvard Business School (HBS) seeks a full-time Predoctoral Fellow to work with Professors Katherine Coffman and Joshua Schwartzstein. This researcher will closely collaborate with Professors Coffman and Schwartzstein on all aspects of their research in behavioral and experimental economics. For example, recent work includes research on stereotypes, discrimination, persuasion, and medical decision-making. Primary Duties:

  • Designing and implementing experiments.
  • Analyzing survey, observational, textual and speech data.
  • Machine learning applications to experimental data.
  • Develop, synthesize and provide analysis of literature reviews. May also provide analysis, editing, and drafts for academic journal articles.
  • Contribute to the development of theoretical frameworks for behavioral phenomena.

This position is ideal for candidates with an interest and plans for doctoral studies in economics after working as a Predoctoral Fellow for two to three years.

The researcher reports directly to the faculty and administrative manager in the Research Staff Services office. Ideal candidates will be comfortable in an environment that requires a high level of independence, intellectual curiosity, and the ability to use discretionary judgment.


Basic Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in economics, mathematics, quantitative sciences, or business-related field required.
  • Statistical/programming experience and/or applied experience with Python, R, Stata or other languages

Additional Qualifications and Skills

The ideal candidate will have a solid background in both economics and data science:

  • Evidence of outstanding academic achievement
  • A background in economics, applied math or other quantitative subjects
  • Familiarity with Qualtrics and/or Prolific
  • Exposure to experimental social science
  • Prior experience as research assistant or doing independent research
  • Strong project management and communication skills in spoken and written English

Additional Information

These are term appointments starting July 1, 2024 through June 30, 2025, with an expectation of reappointment until June 30, 2026 based on funding and performance. All Predoctoral Fellow roles at HBS are structured as one-year term appointments, but faculty strongly prefer candidates willing to commit for two years.

This role is offered as a hybrid (some combination of onsite and remote) where you are required to be onsite at our Boston, MA based campus 2-4 days per week. Specific days and schedule will be determined between you and your manager.
