Position Summary

The Department of Psychology at the University of New Mexico, Cognitive & Affective Neuroscience of Psychopathology (CANoPy;https://www.hogeveen-lab.com/) laboratory (PI: Jeremy Hogeveen, PhD) invites applications for a position as a Postdoctoral Fellow. The is a full-time position funded for an initial term of 2-years, with the potential for renewal pending annual review.  The appointment will begin June 1, 2024.
The Fellow will collaborate with Dr. Hogeveen and members of the CANoPy lab to design, implement, analyze, and disseminate behavioral, neuroimaging (MRI & MEG), and  neurostimulation studies on the neural mechanisms of motivated decision-making in healthy participants and clinical populations. Current datasets collected in the lab span much of the lifespan from adolescence through old age.
While there will be considerable freedom to select a preferred topic based on personal interests, most recent and ongoing funded projects in the lab center on the neural bases of 'explore-exploit' tradeoffs in reinforcement learning-i.e., how individuals balance the tradeoff between learning to exploit familiar choice options based on prior reinforcement, versus exploring novel options to reduce uncertainty in the choice environment.
The CANoPy lab aims to foster a world-class, deeply supportive cognitive neuroscience training environment for the Fellow selected for this position. The lab is well-integrated in the local burgeoning neuroscience community and collaborates well with several other groups at the Mind Research Network (https://www.mrn.org/), the UNM Health Sciences Center (https://hsc.unm.edu/research/), the UNM Center on Alcohol, Substance Use, and Addictions (CASAA; https://casaa.unm.edu/), and other labs within the UNM Psychology Clinical Neuroscience Center (PCNC; https://pcnc.unm.edu/). Available equipment for studies is excellent, including a 3T Siemens Prisma scanner, an Elekta Neuromag MEG system, Magventure TMS complete with Localite and Axilum Cobot, and much more.
Applicants must have a PhD or MD degree, with training in neuroscience, psychology, biology, computer science, or cognitive science. Individuals should also have an established track record of publishing original research in cognitive neuroscience or closely related field. Proficiency in computer programming (e.g. Python, R, shell, and/or MATLAB) and conducting studies that use MRI, MEG, TMS, and/or computational modeling will be required for success in this position.

A complete application consists of a letter describing the applicant’s qualifications as they relate to the minimum and preferred criteria and a current curriculum vita (to include contact information-email address and/or telephone number). Applicants who are appointed to a UNM postdoctoral fellow position are required to provide an official certification of successful completion of all degree requirements prior to their initial employment with UNM.
For best consideration, all required application materials must be received by April 26, 2024.   We will only consider complete applications. The position will remain open until filled. Inquiries about the position should be directed to the search committee chair Dr. Jeremy Hogeveen, and department chair Dr. Derek Hamilton, at [email protected].
