Position Description


Advertised Job Summary
Deploy and maintain atmospheric sensors in rural South Carolina and analyze trends in the observational data sets. Integration of social (perceptions of heat from focus groups interviews) and observational data in the development of convergent frameworks, present research findings in professional venues and publications in peer-reviewed journals.
You will be part of an interdisciplinary team working on coupling social and physical measures of climate induced hazards as we build collaborative pathways for adaptive capacity and adaptation options. The primary focus will be examining perceptions of heat and instrumented measures of it in rural areas of South Carolina. Our methodological approach is part of our NSF-supported multi-state interdisciplinary research team from the University of Idaho and the University of Nevada-Reno addressing wildfire, drought, and heat hazards.
The responsibilities include:
  • Deploy and maintain atmospheric sensors in rural South Carolina.
  • Analyze trends in observation data sets.
  • Use physical frameworks to understand trends in observations including interpreting spatial variables that can impact differences in trends.
  • Contribute to developing research approaches integrating social and physical data streams.
  • Coordinate research assistants on the project.
  • Publish results in high-quality, peer-reviewed journals and present research findings at conferences and seminars.

Required Education and Experience
Ph.D. in Geography, Climatology, Atmospheric Sciences, Earth System Sciences or related fields.
Preferred Qualifications
Ph.D. in Geography, Climatology, Atmospheric Sciences, Earth System Sciences or related fields; interest in the intersection of social and physical sciences; experience with environmental or social data collection and geospatial analytics.
Knowledge/Skills/Abilities
Motivation to succeed in an independent work environment and interact with a multidisciplinary team and rural community;Experience with atmospheric or environmental measurements and data analysis (time series, statistical analysis), and geospatial analytics;Programming experience for data analysis and visualization of time series and spatial data sets (e.g., Python/xarray, R, MATLAB, etc.);Strong planning and organizational skills, with the capacity to effectively prioritize multiple tasks, set clear deadlines, and consistently meet them;Familiarity with field observations of atmospheric variables; experience with environmental or social data collection and geospatial analytics;Strong verbal, written, and organizational skills.
