Position Summary

This position reports to Dr. Timothy Gardner, Associate Professor, and Robert and Leona DeArmond Chair in Neuroengineering.

The Gardner lab focuses on the study of sensory-motor learning in songbirds and in the development of new implantable devices to interface with the brain and peripheral nervous system. The Postdoctoral scholar will conduct research on the neural mechanisms of song performance and song learning using one or more of the following methods: high-channel count neural recordings, optogenetic circuit perturbation, and closed-loop behavioral paradigms.


Minimum Requirements

• PhD in experimental systems neuroscience or related relevant scientific field.
• Experience designing and executing acute/chronic experiments in small animal research models (preference may be given to individuals with songbird research experience).


Professional Competencies

• Experience writing, revising, and performing experiments under university governing systems (IACUC).
• Proficient in handling small animals and performing minor animal surgical procedures.


Preferred Qualifications

• Experience handling and working with songbirds.
• Experience utilizing modern tools for investigating neural circuitry in small animal models (e.g. in-vivo electrophysiological recording/stimulation, optogenetics, calcium imaging, and/or techniques for neuroanatomical tract-tracing).
• Experience with tissue sectioning and immunohistological techniques.
