Position Highlights Seeking an early career scientist with background in community-based environmental science (preferably with experience on analytical chemistry, field sampling, and Indigenous Knowledges) geographic data science (e.g., data management, scripting, and analysis of large datasets) to fill a position as Postdoctoral Researcher with the Geospatial Environmental Health and Science Lab, directed by Dr. Joseph Hoover in the College of Agriculture, Life & Environmental Sciences at the University of Arizona.

The Postdoctoral Researcher will work on projects that might be related, but not limited, to (1) intersecting challenges of climate change and potential environmental contamination from naturally occurring and legacy human activity (such as mining), (2) the analysis of large datasets using machine learning and related frameworks, (3) systematic review of data science, visualization for community engaged environmental health research, and (4) building lab capacity for developing trust-based relationships with Indigenous Peoples. There is flexibility in the specific projects that the Postdoctoral Researcher can undertake during this position. There will be opportunities for mentoring undergraduate and graduate students within the Department of Environmental Science and other programs at the University of Arizona. This position will strongly encourage attendance to academic conferences and support outreach and DEI efforts.

Duties & Responsibilities

Contribute to ongoing research projects and write scholarly publications and present at national or international conferences.

  • Skills with GIS, R, Phyton or other programming languages
  • Strong communication skills
  • Well-developed problem solving, interpersonal and negotiation skills
  • Demonstrated ability to write peer-reviewed publications
  • Working knowledge of NIH, NSF or other funding mechanisms
  • Expertise with climate change, health, and environmental science topics
  • Experience leading field sampling experiences with community engagement

Contribute to the preparation of reports and proposals.

  • Well-developed organizational, analytical and research skills with ability to analyze and interpret complex data processes, and reporting.

Participate with supervision of students and provide mentoring for undergraduate and graduate students working with the research group.

Minimum Qualifications
  • PhD in Environmental Science or another quantitative discipline.
  • The selected candidate must have a conferred PhD upon hire; Experience in innovative research; Experience developing and leading community-engaged research projects.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience partnering with Indigenous Peoples OR; Experience with R or another scripting language OR Experience leading field sampling experiences with community engagement
