Job Summary/Basic Function
Agriculture Research Development Program (ARDP) in the Land-Grant Division at Central State University (CSU) is seeking a postdoctoral scientist to join the Sustainable Nutrition Sciences lab of Dr. Brandy E. Phipps and serve for up to three years (with annual renewal pending successful completion of outputs) to fulfill obligations for United States Department of Agriculture National Institutes of Food and Agriculture (USDA-NIFA) Evans Allen research work.
The candidate should have experience with nutrition science study design and methodology, ideally having worked with nutrient analysis and characterization of bioactive molecules in foods and edible plant natural products. Postdoctoral scientist is expected to design and perform procedures/techniques and cell-based assays to identify and evaluate nutrients and other bioactive compounds in hemp products, other plant products, and foods. Additional responsibilities include researching, interpreting, and evaluating relevant literature; compiling and analyzing data; maintaining an accurate, up-to-date lab notebook to contribute to SOPs; preparing and editing manuscripts for publication; and collaborating with other lab staff. Scientist is expected to supervise and mentor student researchers.
The successful candidate will join a growing research community at CSU, an 1890 Land-Grant in Wilberforce, OH.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:
  • The candidate will possess advanced nutrition experience.
  • Assist the PI and other supporting staff in experimental design and mentoring and supervision of undergraduate student researchers.
  • Perform nutrition experiments, including nutrient and other biomolecule identification and analysis, cell culture, and cell-based assays.
  • Maintain chemical inventory; prepare solutions and reagents for use in the laboratory according to established protocols.
  • Record and maintain experimental data; perform statistical analyses using R or other statistical software programs.
  • Assist the PI and students in the writing and submission of peer reviewed manuscripts.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
  • Doctoral degree in Nutrition Science, Biochemistry, or closely related field.
  • Demonstrated expertise in nutrition science/natural products and publication of refereed publications in the field.
  • Demonstrated experience with designing nutrition science experiments.
  • Demonstrated experience with statistical analyses, including one-way and two-way ANOVAs, factorial, multivariate, and regression analyses.
  • Experience in sample extraction and preparation from biospecimens (humans, animals, and/or cell cultures) as well as experience in handling, storage, and disposal of biospecimens.
  • Demonstrated ability to work effectively with a team.
  • Demonstrated strong critical thinking skills, self-destruction, and motivation.
  • Demonstrated effective project management, time management, prioritization, and organization skills.
  • Demonstrated excellent verbal and written communication skills, including communicating scientific results to a variety of audiences.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Able to produce outcomes under strict deadlines.

Preferred Qualifications
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
  • Experience with hemp and/or other medicinal plants.
  • Experience with metagenomics, spatial transcriptomics, proteomics, and metabolomics a plus.
  • Experience with protocol development, maintenance, and use of analytical equipment.
  • Experience and interest in mentoring/teaching students from diverse cultural and ethnic backgrounds.
  • Organized and detail-oriented with the ability to work under limited supervision.
