The Technology & Policy Research Initiative (TPRI) at Boston University is looking for a postdoctoral researcher to conduct empirical economics research on intangible investments in R&D, software, and advertising. The position involves collaborating with James Bessen and other scholars on studies using confidential microdata at the regional center of the US Census. The research will explore why so few firms invest in these intangibles and what that means for productivity, disparities between firms (by size and ownership by women and minorities), and policy. The position also affords the candidate the opportunity to do research on projects of his or her own choosing. The postdoctoral researcher will have opportunities to engage in all aspects of the research, including exchanging ideas and comments about work in progress, presenting papers at conferences, and interacting with innovation and technology scholars in law and economics at BU and other Boston area universities. The position requires strong communication skills, an interest in the economics of technology, excellent data management and advanced statistical skills (Stata), strong programming ability, and good teamwork capabilities. Experience working with the Census is a strong plus. The position is full time for one year. Salary is competitive and comes with a full benefits package as an employee of Boston University.

About the Technology & Policy Research Initiative. The Technology & Policy Research Initiative (TPRI) supports independent inter-disciplinary research on the causes and consequences of technological change. TPRI also works with leaders from the business and policy communities to translate research results into fact-based innovation policies that promote equitable and sustainable long-term growth. Our Fellows come from Boston University, affiliates at Utrecht University, and the wider academic community in the US, Europe and Asia. TPRI is a joint initiative with faculty leadership from the Boston University School of Law and Boston University Questrom School of Business.


Ph.D. in economics or closely related field required. The position requires strong communication skills, an interest in the economics of technology, excellent data management and advanced statistical skills (Stata), strong programming ability, and good teamwork capabilities. The position requires obtaining Special Sworn Status at the Census and this is available only to candidates who have been resident in the US for 36 months of the last 5 years.
