POSITION DESCRIPTION

The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) Center for Earth System Sciences and Remote Sensing Technologies (CESSRST) has openings for a number of postdoctoral positions and invites applications from qualified candidates. CESSRST is Cooperative Science Center (CSC) funded by the NOAA Educational Partnership Program with Minority Serving Institutions (EPP/MSI). The Center is a consortium of universities, dedicated to advancing research and education in Earth systems observations, modeling, and environmental sciences. The participating institutions are geographically distributed across the nation and have a strong commitment to fostering diversity, with a high enrollment of students from communities traditionally under-represented and historically excluded in STEM and the NOAA workforce.

●    University of Puerto Rico at Mayaguez, Mayaguez, PR (UPRM)
●    University of Texas at El Paso, El Paso, TX (UTEP)
●    San Diego State University, San Diego, CA (SDSU)
●    Hampton University, Hampton, VA (HU)

Positions will be at CCNY (CESSRST Lead Institution at City College of New York, NYC), although some may be available at partner CESSRST institutions listed above. Successful candidates will contribute to cutting-edge research initiatives and collaborations within the specified areas: 

a.    Satellite and radar data assimilation
b.    In-situ and ground-based remote sensing of atmospheric composition, and  satellite atmospheric composition product validation and algorithm development.
c.    Severe weather and hydrology applications
d.    Satellite remote sensing of atmospheric soundings, including trace gasses
e.    Modeling and/or observations of atmosphere-land-sea interactions, especially in coastal urban environments or the arctic
f.    Remote sensing technology and algorithm development with environmental/ Earth science applications.
g.    Climate and environmental impact studies on health, infrastructure, and/or economy employing social science methodologies and data science techniques.     

Responsibilities will include, but are not limited to:
●    Conducting research aligned with a specific focus area.
●    Collaborating with interdisciplinary teams, including faculty members, researchers, and students across multiple CESSRST campuses and NOAA partners.  This may include spending time at a NOAA facility or laboratory.
●    Co-designing and implementing research projects to include social impact on communities and/or relevancy to climate mitigation and adaptation.
●    Disseminating research findings through publications, presentations, reports, and other knowledge-sharing platforms.
●    Mentoring graduate and/or undergraduate students in related research activities.
●    Work collaboratively with faculty members in development and submission of grants.

SALARY RANGE. [70,000-85,000]

QUALIFICATIONS
Basic Qualifications (required at the time of application): A PhD degree in the physical sciences, engineering, or social sciences with expertise relevant to the NOAA mission-aligned responsibilities outlined above.
