Job Description

Idaho State University invites applications for a Postdoctoral Research Associate with specialization in data science to join an interdisciplinary team to conduct research on Energy-Water Systems in the state of Idaho. This position is within a recently awarded National Science Foundation Established Program to Stimulate Competitive Research Infrastructure Improvement (NSF-EPSCOR) program, entitled “Idaho’s Community-engaged Resilience for Energy-Water Systems” (ICREWS), which, as a whole, will facilitate community-engaged research with Tribal Nations and other communities in Idaho to evaluate, model, and develop future scenarios for Energy-Water Systems under various types of environmental, technological, and social change. For this position, we seek applicants whose research interests can help characterize the past and current states of the energy-water system in Idaho. This characterization is done in the context of community-engaged research, focusing in particular on co-produced research with Tribal Nations. Relevant datasets include those that characterize environmental change, land use change and/or decision-making, water management and decision-making, energy systems and technological change, and the social dimensions of resilience and vulnerability. We are interested in candidates from a broad range of disciplines, including geography, data science, hydrology, and energy systems. While we are open to a variety of theoretical and methodological approaches, candidates with expertise in GIS, participatory modeling, or scenario analysis are particularly encouraged to apply. The Postdoctoral Research Associate will work collaboratively with ICREWS team members at Idaho State University, Boise State University, and the University of Idaho, a group of faculty and students committed to transdisciplinary, team-based, actionable research that addresses real-world environmental challenges. The position is based at Idaho State University in Pocatello, Idaho and is renewable for two years, contingent upon performance.

Key Responsibilities

(1) A willingness to work within an interdisciplinary team including social scientists, engineers, modelers, biologists, and geoscientists.

(2) A willingness to work with community partners, including Tribal Nations, to enhance our understanding of resilience and vulnerability under multiple stressors.

(3) Discover, package and deliver data on Energy-Water Systems in multiple formats from multiple sources including government agencies, private businesses, public documents and local communities.

(4) As both a lead author and collaborator, publish and present the results of work within this project.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Doctoral degree (or ABD) in a discipline within the broad areas of geography, engineering, physical and natural sciences, data science, the social sciences or related fields
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Experience in gathering, managing, packaging, and analyzing qualitative or quantitative data
  • Demonstrated ability or willingness to work with communities, stakeholders, policy makers, and an interdisciplinary team of scientists

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience working with Tribal Nations
  • Working knowledge of Data Sovereignty
  • Experience in working with mixed data including spatial, temporal and qualitative data
  • Skills in data science, database development, modeling, statistics and interpolation techniques
  • Experience with or ability to publish work in peer-reviewed journals

Additional Information

You must submit your CV/resume, cover letter which addresses your experience relative to each minimum and preferred qualification, and list of three (3) professional references, including current contact information. This position will remain open until it is filled. Salary will be commensurate with education and experience. Benefits include comprehensive health, dental, and vision; life insurance; disability plan; employee assistance program (EAP); excellent retirement options and company contribution; and generous paid time off/sick leave accrual.
