Posting Summary
Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey, is seeking a Postdoctoral Fellow for NJMS- Microbiology, Biochemistry & Molecular Genetics. A postdoctoral fellow position is available in the Petrou lab at Rutgers-New Jersey Medical School (NJMS) to support NIH-funded research. Our research focuses on the structural biology of membrane proteins using single particle cryoelectron microscopy (cryo-EM). Our goal is to characterize the structure and function of bacterial membrane enzymes involved in antibiotic resistance, and eukaryotic receptors and enzymes relevant to human physiology and pathology. The Postdoctoral Fellow is responsible for the expression and purification of proteins using bacterial, insect and mammalian heterologous expression systems, and for the structure determination of membrane proteins and/or protein complexes by single-particle cryo-EM. In addition, the Postdoctoral Fellow is responsible for biophysical or biochemical characterization of target proteins, including protein-ligand or protein-protein interactions.
Among the key duties of this position are the following:
  • Protein expression and purification – heterologous protein expression using bacterial, insect or mammalian systems, affinity purification, and chromatographic separation using FPLC and HPLC.
  • Determination of three-dimensional structures of proteins using cryo-electron microscopy data and appropriate computational programs/resources (e.g. Relion, cryoSPARC, etc.).
  • Collects, compiles and presents data with appropriate conclusions, recommendations, etc. pertinent to research activity.
  • Communicates regularly with the Principal Investigator.
  • Maintains detailed and accurate experimental records.
  • Participates and presents in journal clubs, seminars and conferences.
  • Prepares reports for peer-reviewed scientific publications, and contributes to grant writing
  • Performs training of lab personnel in molecular biology, biochemistry and single-particle cryo-EM.
