Postdoctoral Fellow - Chemical Engineering

Carnegie Mellon University’s Center for Atmospheric Particle Studies and Bigelow Laboratory for Ocean Sciences are seeking a postdoctoral researcher for a project to investigate how marine trace gas emissions from planktonic communities influence atmospheric aerosol production.

 The aim of the project is to determine the extent to which planktonic communities emit atmospheric compounds beyond dimethyl sulfide and how that contributes to the formation of aerosols. These compounds, such as ammonia and alkylamines, are thought to play a key role in atmospheric new particle formation. Water chemistry, emission measurements, and aerosol formation will be examined in the laboratory using cultured and natural planktonic communities. In addition, marine biogeochemical measurements coupled with atmospheric composition observations will be conducted in the Gulf of Maine. Results from this project will help constrain the trace gas exchange of most atmospheric nucleation precursors which are currently not included in global climate models.

You will have the opportunity to craft the project according to your own ideas and experience, to mentor graduate students, and disseminate results at conferences and in journal articles. The applicant will work primarily with Prof. Coty Jen in CMU’s Department of Chemical Engineering and Center for Atmospheric Particle Studies with a joint appointment at Bigelow Laboratory for Ocean Science with Dr. Stephen Archer.

The initial contract will be for one year and is renewable for up to two additional years, subject to good performance and the availability of funds.
 

Your core responsibilities will include:

• Developing experimental methods to observe coupled marine biochemical markers with gas-phase emissions.

• Leading the organization of result-sharing between Bigelow Lab and CMU

• Organizing two field campaigns at Bigelow Lab

• Documenting research results for use in project sponsor status reports and publications and assist in the acquisition of supplemental and/or ongoing funding for current and future research projects, travel grants and/or foundation awards;

• Planning, coordinating, and distributing information for meetings, conferences and publications and conduct occasional meetings with project sponsor personnel;

• Other duties as assigned.

Qualifications:

• Preferred applicants will have, or be close to completing, a PhD in ocean biogeochemistry, biochemical aspects of microbial oceanography or phytoplankton biology, or related fields.

• Applicants must be interested in interdisciplinary research of atmosphere and ocean science.

• Experience with field observations is particularly desirable.
