Normal Work Schedule: Monday - Friday 8:00am to 4:45pm

Job Summary: The Postdoctoral Fellow provides for an internship and continuation of scholarly activity and research after achieving the PhD or other doctoral degree under the direction of a senior faculty member who serves as a mentor for the postdoctoral appointee.

Additional Department Summary: The Coastal Hydrology Lab at The University of Alabama invites applications for a Postdoctoral Reseacher position. The position is fully funded by external grants from NSF, and NOAA, and the successful applicants will work with Dr. Hamed Moftakhari (https://hmoftakhari.people.ua.edu/). The Coastal Hydrology Lab uses computational modeling, and a wide range of in-situ and remotely-sensed data, analytical, and statistical tools/methods to characterize and quantify the extent to which coastal communities are exposed to compound flooding and how it will be exacerbated by sea level rise in the coming years.

Conducts innovative and applied research on compound flood inundation mapping and nonstationary coastal flood hazard assessment. Characterizes the boundary conditions for hydrodynamic modeling of compound floods requires a comprehensive understanding of the dynamic interactions between atmosphere, ocean and land. Develops and implements dynamic and statistical approaches for compound flood modeling. Employs multiple meteorological forcing data and observational data including in-situ and satellite imagery, and land surface features as well as variety of deep learning methods for coastal flood inundation mapping. Lead and contributes in writing scientific papers and technical reports. Assists in developing proposals for external funding. Presents research results via scientific conferences and peer-reviewed publications.

The position start date will be in January 2025 and for the initial appointment length of one year, which can be extended for another year, upon good performance and funding availability.

Required Minimum Qualifications: Doctorate. Additional qualifications based on assignment.

Additional Required Department Minimum Qualifications: Ph.D. in Civil, Environmental, Coastal or Ocean Engineering majoring hydrology, hydraulics, or a closely related field. Postdoctoral candidates will need to have completed their Ph.D. or have it completed by the start of employment. Applicants should upload a cover letter, curriculum vitae, two first-authored writing samples and include contact information of at least three references. Please upload additional documents to the “other documents” tab as needed.
