Postdoctoral Associate- Viral Pathogenesis

Required Qualifications: (As Evidenced by an Attached Resume)
Doctoral Degree (or foreign equivalent) in Biology, Microbiology, Virology, or Biochemistry in hand by the time of hire. Understanding of experimental procedures used to study viral pathogenesis of the brain and immune regulation of viral spread to and within the CNS.

Preferred Qualifications:  
PhD in Virology. Prior experience with Flaviviruses. Prior experience with cultivating BSL3 viral pathogenesis and the use of BSL3 facilities and murine experiments. Two (2)- Five (5) years of Molecular Biology experience and experience with virally infected cell culture or mice. Analysis of murine immune responses using single cell RNA sequencing approaches, transcriptional induction responses in situ hybridization, and flow cytometry of CNS responses.

Brief Description of Duties:  
The Postdoctoral Associate will be a team of scientists, graduate students and technicians in the lab of
Dr. Erich Mackow in the department of Microbiology and Immunology. The incumbent will perform research on Powassan virus in tissue culture and murine models and ensure that all experiments are appropriately conducted following the policies and procedures of Stony Brook University

      Perform POWV experiments and analyze data following viral infection of primary cells, cell lines and following murine infection in BSL2/BSL3 and ABSL3 settings.

      Analyze viral responses of infected and uninfected CNS cells and assess protein expression and transcriptional responses using scRNAeq, qRT-PCR, and ISH.

      Conduct research experiments using recombinant DNA approaches to generate and evaluate POWVs modified by reverse genetics and define interactions with cellular proteins, cytokine induction, and the regulation of functional and transcriptional responses.

      Work with and direct experimental studies and study analysis by technicians and graduate students.

      Document data generated in studies, collect data, analyze data and prepare manuscripts and figures for publication in scientific journals and national and international scientific meetings and assist with grant reports, grant proposal writing and compliance reports.

      General Lab maintenance and ordering of supplies needed for studies.

      Other duties as assigned.
