The Department of Microbiology, Immunology & Tropical Medicine (MITM) at the School of Medicine & Health Sciences conducts innovative, fundamental, basic and translational research for neglected tropical diseases and other infectious diseases. MITM has a strong tradition of training and policy advocacy for these infectious diseases, which initiate and perpetuate poverty and suffering worldwide. A postdoctoral position is available in the Laboratory of Translational Type 2 Immunity at the School of Medicine and Health Sciences, George Washington University, Washington DC, under the supervision of Dr. Pedro Gazzinelli-Guimaraes.
The successful candidate will perform laboratory research on projects focused on the molecular basis of allergen- and helminth parasite-driven effector type-2 inflammation in animal models. The candidate will use advanced techniques and strategies to investigate the mechanisms underlying the pulmonary type-2 inflammation driven by mucosal allergen sensitization and helminth infection, as well as their bystander effects using animal models.
In collaboration with experienced researchers, the postdocs will participate in the planning and conduction of discovery research, data analysis and interpretation, preparation of materials for publication, presentations at conferences and meetings, and may develop new theories and methodologies. This role can expect timely advice as to research directions and career planning for a future independent career.
The Postdoctoral Associate:
  • holds a PhD or equivalent degree.
  • has experience in immunology, tissue pathology, and murine models is required.
  • has a limited term of up to five years at GW.
Minimum Qualifications
This position requires Ph.D. in public health or a related field (e.g., epidemiology, biostatistics, data science, etc.). A strong background in quantitative/qualitative methodology, writing, and engagement in self-directed and guided research are required. Ability to meet deadlines and efficiently multitask is also required.
Desired Qualifications:
The candidate must have strong collaborative skills, and excellent written and oral communication skills. In general, the expectation is that the postdoctoral fellows will design, organize and conduct specialized and advanced experiments using established scientific protocols, troubleshoot and design new protocols, summarize findings and publish results in research journals, under the general supervision of a faculty member. In some cases, postdocs will assume general responsibility for general scientific operations in the lab, and/or provide supervision and guidance to laboratory staff, trainees, and other researchers.
