Job Description:

This position is part of the research program in the Aldrich laboratory in the Department of Medicinal Chemistry focused on the evaluation of the biological activity of peptides synthesized in the laboratory. Responsibilities will include cell culture, biochemical and cellular assays, statistical analysis of data and other experiments as needed; and provide general laboratory maintenance, including ordering, routine record keeping, and compliance with hazardous waste and biological safety requirements.

Cell culture

Maintain cell cultures of different mammalian cell lines which will involve using aseptic technique, passaging cells and maintaining cell line records.

Research

Analysis of the biological activity of peptides. This will involve biochemical and cellular assays, western blot analysis, optimizing testing procedures, statistical analysis of data and other experiments as needed.

Carry out research and data analysis in accordance with stipulated protocols, quality and safety standards.

Develop, learn, and troubleshoot new techniques as needed based on current projects in the laboratory.

Laboratory records and maintenance

Maintain accurate laboratory records that record research methods, procedures, and results. Prepare figures, reports, sections of manuscripts and presentations on the research. Prepare standard operating procedures and detailed written protocols for experiments as needed. Carry out literature searches relevant to the research topic.

Ensure equipment used for cell culture and biological assays is functioning properly and undergoes appropriate calibration.

Other duties include attending lab meetings and providing input on related studies ongoing in the laboratory.

Laboratory management

Assist with managing daily operations of the laboratory: including ordering, inventory, compliance with biological safety requirements, routine record keeping, maintaining stock solutions including cell culture media and common buffers.

Assist in maintaining laboratory safety programs and training personnel in laboratory safety techniques.

Responsible for and required to protect laboratory (and UF) intellectual property which include maintaining confidential data accurately and safely in accordance with laboratory notebook SOPs and UF IP policy.

Contribute to general duties of laboratory operation, including cleaning and organization of the area, supplies, and equipment.

Minimum Requirements:

Ph.D. in biochemistry, biology or a closely related field.

Preferred Qualifications:

Experience with mammalian cell culture, aseptic techniques and analysis of cellular proteins using techniques including western blot analysis.

Positive attitude to work with a track record of working well with other lab members and performing all work in a safe manner.
