Position Summary
The Public Safety Institute (PSI) at the University of Memphis seeks a postdoctoral scholar to start on or before August 1, 2024. This is a 12-month, non-tenure track appointment, renewable annually, contingent on satisfactory performance and funding. The ideal candidate will hold a Ph.D. in Criminology or a closely related field with a background in program evaluation, policy analysis, and possess strong quantitative and qualitative research skills. The J.D. degree alone is not appropriate for this position.
The PSI is an interdisciplinary unit of the university committed to identifying and advancing best practices in public safety. It is housed within the School of Urban Affairs and Public Policy, in the College of Arts and Sciences, and works closely with faculty of the Department of Criminology & Criminal Justice, as well as faculty from related social science disciplines. The PSI is partially funded by the Memphis Shelby Crime Commission (https://memphiscrime.org/ ), a private non-profit 501©(3) organization that serves as a leadership team for reducing crime in Memphis and Shelby County. The primary mission of the Crime Commission is to spearhead the Safe Community Action Plan, a five-year plan to significantly improve public safety in the Memphis area, galvanize diverse leaders and stakeholders in the implementation and support of the plan, and manage the work necessary to achieve implementation (https://memphiscrime.org/safe-community-plan/ ). A primary role of the PSI is to monitor progress toward the Safe Community Action Plan goals and objectives and eventually evaluate the plan’s success in reducing violent crime. Another is to work with the PSI team to connect faculty from around campus with community partners towards academic-practitioner partnerships, agency and program evaluations, and funded research projects.
The successful candidate will be responsible for developing grant proposals, writing literature reviews, developing research design, conducting research (e.g., survey methodology, interviews, construction online questionnaire), entering and analyzing data, and reporting findings for projects related to both goals. Additional responsibilities include active collaboration with various local and state government and non-profit agencies to develop grant proposals for private, local, state, and federal funders. Current projects including the creation and implementation of a coordinated community response to domestic violence, an evaluation of the Youth Villages’ SWITCH Youth program, a hospital-based violence intervention program in partnership with Le Bonheur Children’s Hospital, and, aligned with the Safe Community Action Plan, a partnership with the City of Memphis’s Gun Violence Intervention Program and evaluations of the Shelby County Office of Reentry and Neighborhood Safe Initiative.

Minimum Position Qualifications
Ph.D. in Criminology or closely related field required in addition to:
1. Experience with program evaluation and policy analysis;
2. Experience with quantitative and qualitative methods and analyses;
3. Experience collaborating with agencies on developing, implementing, and evaluating
programs;
4. Experience with collecting, entering, managing, and analyzing various types of data.
Desired Qualifications
1. Grant-writing experience;
2. Experience working on funded projects;
3. Record of scholarly publication;
4. Prior experience working with government agencies and/or non-profits.
