The Computational Science Initiative (CSI) at Brookhaven National Laboratory (BNL) invites exceptional candidates to apply for a postdoc researcher position in emerging technology and scientific computing. This position offers a unique opportunity to develop scientific software for emerging technology and high-performance computing (HPC) with applications in diverse scientific domains of interest to BNL and the Department of Energy (DOE). Topics of specific interest include: (i) developing novel distributed / federated machine learning (ML) algorithms, (ii) secure computing including blockchain, (iii) improving communication framework for edge computing and HPC, and (iv) implementing analytical algorithms to improve DOE applications on edge and HPC. The position includes access to world-class HPC resources, such as the BNL Institutional Cluster and DOE leadership computing facilities. Access to these platforms will allow computing at scale and will ensure that the successful candidate will have the necessary resources to solve challenging DOE problems of interest.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Develop scientific software
  • Develop and implement ML algorithms for scientific applications
  • Work in interdisciplinary collaborations with applied domain scientists on various aspects of scientific data generation, processing, and analysis
  • Formulate own high-quality research ideas and directions in collaboration with mentors in the group
  • Communicate research progress, challenges and achievements, and engage within and beyond the group on new potential collaborations

Position Requirements:

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • PhD in computer science, software engineering, or a related field awarded within the last 5 years

  • Proficient in software developing

  • Understanding of AI/ML and experience in developing / applying AI/ML in the research community

  • Experience in implementing ML algorithms on ML platforms (i.e. PyTorch, TensorFlow, JAX, DeepSpeed, etc)

Preferred Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Experience in parallel and distributed computing / training

  • Edge computing

  • Blockchain

  • Message-oriented middleware


Other:

  •  BNL policy requires that after obtaining a PhD, eligible candidates for research associate appointments may not exceed a combined total of 5 years of relevant work experience as a post-doc and/or in an R&D position, excluding time associated with family planning, military service, illness or other life-changingevents
  • Initial two-year term appointment subject to renewal for up to five years contingent on performance and funding

  • Brookhaven National Laboratory is committed to providing fair, equitable and competitive compensation. The full salary range for this position is $68400 - $113250 / year. Salary offers will be commensurate with the final candidate’s qualification, education and experience and considered with the internal peer group.
