Job Summary:

The Center for Bioethics and Humanities, University of Colorado Anschutz Medical Campus is seeking 1-2 full time postdoctoral researcher to join our world-class multidisciplinary research group that focuses on empirical, policy-relevant research on topics at the intersection of bioethics and health policy. This is a one-year, grant-funded full-time position and may be renewed for a second year. Campbell, Dr. Lisa Bero, Dr. Matt Wynia, Dr. Christine Baugh, Dr. Matthew DeCamp and Dr. Megan Morris. (https://www.cuanschutz.edu/centers/bioethicshumanities/facultystaff#faculty ). Our research methods span the spectrum of traditional health services research methodologies including, but not limited to, qualitative methods, survey research, secondary data analyses, meta-research, quasi-experimental methods and clinical trials.   

The postdoctoral researcher will focus on examining the ethical, legal and social implications of ingestible electroceuticals, mRNA drug delivery devices and related emerging technologies.  The postdoctoral researcher will be expected to significantly contribute to 1) a scoping review of ethical and regulatory literature relevant to these novel therapies, 2) qualitative semi-structured interviews to understand key stakeholder perspectives, 3) a survey to members of the public regarding key ELSI topics pertinent to these novel therapies, and 4) a series of roundtables grounded in a modified Delphi method to develop best practice guidelines.  The post-doctoral researcher will have the opportunity for authorship on academic papers emerging from the work described above. 

In this role you will be expected to:

  • Begin to establish an independent program of empirical research,
  • Engage in multidisciplinary scholarly activities consistent with the mission of the CBH and the University of Colorado;
  • Prepare and present your current and future research in high impact journals and at conferences;
  • Provide mentorship to research staff as appropriate;
  • Participate in the group’s academic and operational meetings. 

Key Responsibilities:

  • Scoping review protocol development, literature cleaning, data collection, coding, and analysis
  • Participant recruitment for interviews and expert panel
  • Conducting, coding and analyzing interviews
  • Attending meetings of expert panel and analyzing results
  • Prepare tables and figures for papers, presentations, and other academic products
  • Coordinate members of the study team and ensure regulatory compliance
  • Prioritize work across multiple studies or deadlines
  • Contribute to papers and grants, ideally taking the lead on parts of a large research agenda

Qualifications:

Minimum Qualifications:  

Applicants must meet minimum qualifications at the time of hire.  

  • PhD, JD or MD or equivalent doctorate with a focus on ethics, health policy, regulatory policy, public policy, public health, or a related field
  • Track record of publication in scientific and / or medical journals 

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Prior research related to ethics or regulation of pharmaceuticals
  • Experience with evidence synthesis and qualitative research
  • Published systematic reviews or other evidence syntheses
  • Familiarity with the US healthcare system, particularly drug regulatory system
  • Interests in health policy, medicine, ethics of novel pharmaceuticals 

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Data management, programming and analytical skills
  • Data synthesis and visualization
  • Ability to work with interview data
  • Excellent written communication
  • Ability to multitask and collaborate with an interdisciplinary team
  • Potential to develop an independent research career
  • Knowledge of the extant literature on the ethical, legal and social implications of novel health technologies and related areas

Anticipated Pay Range:

The starting salary range (or hiring range ) for this position follows the NIH postdoctoral researcher pay scale (https://www.ninds.nih.gov/funding/preparing-your-application/preparing-budget/salary-cap-stipends-training-funds ) which defines the range as $56,484-$68,604, dependent on number of years of post-doctoral experience

The above hiring range represents the University’s good faith and reasonable estimate of the range of possible compensation at the time of posting. This position is not eligible for overtime compensation unless it is non-exempt.
