Post-Doctoral Research Associate – Transmission Electron Microscopy DESCRIPTION: This position involves experimental research on nuclear reactor related materials. The work will entail the development of a transmission electron microscope (TEM) that will be custom modified for range of in-situ TEM techniques including ion irradiation and laser bombardment. The post-doc will work on a diverse and energetic team in the development of these capabilities and the application to a range of complex experimental systems. The position will also entail working with both internal and external users associated with the University of Tennessee, Knoxville on the training and operation of the highly modified, high-contrast TEM. Additional duties include technical interactions with graduate students, Oak Ridge National Laboratory, and other National Laboratories research staff members, contributing to and developing new research initiatives, writing peer reviewed scientific journal articles, and fiscal and technical management of research projects. The appointment would be a limited term appointment, approximately 1 year with the possibility of renewal for future years. The end goal after the appointment would be for you to secure a permanent position that is compatible with your interest. The objective will be to also assist managing ongoing funded projects and to work with a mentor to prepare research proposals that are competitive for U.S. federal funding agencies to generate new projects.

EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE, AND SKILLS REQUIRED: Position requires a Ph.D. degree in Nuclear Engineering, Materials Science, Physics, or an equivalent field. The successful applicant will be a PhD graduate or will complete their doctoral program within 9 months of the time of application, demonstrated experience with a range of transmission electron microscopy (TEM) techniques and material characterization strategy. The canidate must have a good publication record of peer-reviewed, archival journal publications that documents the ability to successfully complete and analyze TEM results with respect to experimental observations. Demonstrated expertise in nuclear materials systems and ion beam analysis techniques is desired.
