Post-Doctoral Research Associate- Civil & Environmental Engineering - 23000002LI

Description

The Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering seeks applications from extraordinarily qualified postdoctoral fellows.  Research areas include the application and development of air quality and climate models.  The successful candidate will develop a climate and atmosphere chemistry and physics research program to either (1) reactive emission model development and analysis, (2) characterize dust and landscape changes in the modeling approaches, (3) shell core mechanisms, by which closely related species adapt to atmosphere and land environments, or (4) wildfire and biomass burning mechanisms by which transport thrive in changing climate.  The work will be conducted to design integrated, computational model developments for modeling, analysis and interpretation.  To meet these goals, the successful candidate will collaborate with research teams in the Departments of Civil & Environmental Engineering at UTK and ORNL’s Computational Earth System Group in the Computer Science and Engineering Division.  A PhD in a related field, a strong record of accomplishment, and demonstrated experience in regional climate modeling.

SPECIFIC RESPONSIBILITIES:

Investigate the climate forcing from dust and biomass burning

Develop novel approaches to simulate dust and biomass burning in a polluted area with a changing climate

Develop research programs that lead to continued funding. To accomplish this goal, the candidate is expected to present his/her research at conferences and to publish in high-impact, peer-reviewed journals

Supervise a small group of graduate and undergraduate students

Collaborate and develop strong working relations with relevant funded teams (e.g. US EPA STAR, NOAA, NSF, BER SBR, etc.) on model design, data analysis, collection field sampling, and long-term project planning.

Qualifications

KEY SUCCESS FACTORS:

PhD in Atmospheric Science, Computational Science, Environmental Engineering, or related field.

Demonstrated experience in managing multiple projects and in corresponding with scientific collaborators.

Demonstrated success in the publication of high-impact work in internationally recognized peer-reviewed journals

         Strong organizational and record-keeping skills.

Effective interpersonal skills and demonstrated ability to work in a team environment with a diverse group of scientific and technical personnel.

Strong written and verbal communication skills.
