Position Description

Advertised Job Summary
The University of South Carolina Beaufort (USCB) seeks a highly motivated Teaching Postdoctoral Fellow to join our Marine Biology research program focused on understanding the biotic and abiotic systems of Pritchards Island, a barrier island located just north of Hilton Head Island that has remained in a largely unaltered state since the arrival of European colonists. Responsibilities are to design and carry out a research program that helps to assess the biological diversity, the impacts of coastal environmental change, and/or collect other baseline data to characterize this unique and under-studied resource. Teaching duties will include a lecture and a lab course, or its equivalent, each semester of the academic year. The candidate’s area of specialization falls broadly into estuarine, coastal or marine biology, but will complement other research activities on the island, require integration with other faculty research activities and must include undergraduate students. Funds are available for research supplies and student assistants, as needed. Existing team expertise includes marine genomics, coastal and estuarine biogeochemistry, invertebrate taxonomy, and marine microbiology with additional local governmental GIS expertise also available.
The Postdoctoral Fellow is a full-time temporary position and the candidate can begin as early as August 2023. The Fellowship will last one year, with the strong possibility of up to two additional years of funding. Given the dual expectations of teaching and research, the Fellowship is designed to train and provide experience for individuals interested in pursuing a career as a research faculty member, particularly at a Predominantly Undergraduate Institution (PUI) like USCB.
The Bluffton “main” Campus is located where Beaufort and Jasper Counties meet, while the Beaufort Campus lies in the heart of historic Beaufort. The county harbors an extensive barrier island system surrounded by one of the largest expanses of Spartina marsh on the eastern coast of the United States (~12% of W. Atlantic salt marsh) and borders the 350,000-acre ACE Basin (described as “One of the last great places” by the Nature Conservancy). These salt marsh systems provide nursery grounds and habitats for a large diversity of estuarine and marine species of ecological and/or commercial importance. This position was created as part of a newly funded program to better understand the biological, geological, chemical and physical processes of barrier islands, specifically Pritchards Island. Pritchards Island is a relatively pristine barrier island, accessible only by boat and donated to the university by Philip Rhodes to conserve the island and provide environmental education to the public and opportunities for research scientists to better understand barrier island systems of the Lowcountry.
Interested applicants should be prepared to submit a research statement, teaching statement, curriculum vitae, unofficial copies of undergraduate and graduate transcripts, and names and contact information of at least three references.
Qualifications
Candidates must have earned a doctorate in biology, or similar field (e.g., ecology, evolution, genetics, physiology), prior to the start date.
