Description

University of Colorado Anschutz Medical Campus

Department: Medicine- Division of Renal Diseases and Hypertension

Job Title:  Post-Doctoral Fellow

Position #00637555 – Requisition #32095

Job Summary:

The position is for postdoctoral training in clinical and translational research focusing on vascular and kidney function in patients with kidney diseases. Under the direction of Kristen Nowak, PhD, MPH, the laboratory is conducting research investigating mechanisms contributing to vascular dysfunction in individuals with kidney diseases and conducting clinical trials evaluating novel therapeutics to improve vascular function and slow kidney disease progression.  We utilize a translational approach to identify integrative (systemic to molecular) physiological mechanisms contributing to outcomes in our clinical trials. The clinical research group in the Division of Renal Diseases and Hypertension consists of both M.D. and Ph.D. researchers who are supported by grants from the National Institutes of Health, the Department of Defense, and the PKD Foundation. The postdoctoral fellow will work directly with the principal investigator, Dr. Nowak, through a multidisciplinary approach emphasizing both research training and mentoring.

Dr. Nowak directs the Clinical Vascular Physiology Laboratory, a state-of-the-art facility with equipment and established methodologies to measure vascular endothelial function, arterial stiffness, cerebrovascular function, and collect vascular endothelial cells. Dr. Nowak’s research projects include clinical trials evaluating interventions including lifestyle-based trials (e.g., caloric restriction and weight loss), nutraceuticals and dietary supplements (e.g., a caloric restriction mimetic), as novel approaches (e.g. high-intensity inspiratory muscle strength training) in populations with kidney diseases (chronic kidney disease [CKD], autosomal dominant polycystic kidney disease [ADPKD]). She is also actively researching the role of adiposity in ADPKD progression, including imaging-based analyses. Additionally, the research team has expertise in epidemiology and utilizes numerous large datasets to investigate questions related to risk factors of cardiovascular disease and kidney disease progression. Dr. Nowak also actively collaborates with other faculty in the Division, who conduct translational studies, including Dr. Vienna Brunt, who conducts translational studies (mice to people) aimed at elucidating and therapeutically targeting mechanisms of vascular dysfunction in kidney diseases, and Dr. Katharina Hopp, who’s research includes elucidating the functional role of immune cells within the cystic microenvironment and the impact of dysregulated metabolism as a driver of cyst growth in murine models of ADPKD. Thus, there is potential for collaborative translational projects. The position has the potential for support from a Ruth L. Kirschstein Institutional National Research Service Award grant.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Plan, perform, analyze, and oversee clinical and translational research focused on vascular and/or kidney function.
  • Take a leadership role in developing new scientific ideas, methodologies, and research projects.
  • Conduct reviews of scientific literature.
  • Train laboratory personnel in experimental techniques.
  • Participate in educational seminars and lab meetings.
  • Actively write grants and scientific publications.
  • Work both independently and collaboratively.
