Position Summary | Supporting the research program in the laboratory of Dr. Yufeng Zhang is the primary responsibility of this Post Doctoral Fellow position. This includes designing and carrying out experiments, developing new techniques, training and supervising graduate and undergraduate students, analyzing data, drafting of manuscripts and fellowship applications, and contributing to grant applications. The candidate will have the opportunity to work on both evolutionary and aging questions using non-model species in the lab including long-lived organisms. The successful candidate will be expected to begin to develop an independent research program. The Zhang lab conducts research using cell culture, animal models, and non-model organisms. The position is a full-time (12 month) appointment. The University offers an excellent benefits package, and the state of Tennessee currently has no state income tax. Memphis and the surrounding areas maintain a very low cost of living relative to most parts of the country. Candidates must be available to start on or prior to August 1, 2024. |
Minimum Position Qualifications | An earned PhD or equivalent in any area of biology or related field is required, with a preference to candidates trained in an area of bioenergetics. Qualified candidates should have a publication record documenting their involvement in basic science research. Experience with non-model organisms (birds, mole-rats, etc) and working with primary cell culture would be a significant asset. Qualified candidates should have strong knowledge and background in evolution, sexual selection, bioenergetics, metabolism and aging processes. The candidate must show a willingness to learn and demonstrate great work ethic. The successful applicant is also expected to have excellent organizational and interpersonal skills. Effective oral and written communication skills in English are required. Candidate must meet eligibility requirements to begin and continue working in the United States at the time of appointment. |
Special Conditions | SETTING: The College of Health Sciences (http://www.memphis.edu/healthsciences/ ) offers the B.S. degree in Health Studies with concentrations in Dietetics; Exercise, Sport & Movement Sciences; Healthcare Leadership; and Health Sciences; as well as the B.S.Ed. degree in Physical Education Teacher Education, and Sport Coaching. The college also offers the M.S. degree in Health Studies with concentrations in Exercise, Sport & Movement Sciences; Lifestyle Medicine; Physical Education Teacher Education; Exercise Nutrition. A second M.S. degree is offered in Nutrition with concentrations in Clinical Nutrition; Environmental Nutrition; and Nutrition Science. The college maintains an extensive University-wide physical activity program. There are approximately 1500 undergraduate and graduate majors within CHS.
