Position Summary/Purpose of Position:
A Postdoctoral position is available in the Institute of Bioscience and Biotechnology Research at University of Maryland College Park to study the role of plant mobile mRNAs in the induction of graft induced pathogen resistance. This multi-year position is within Dr. James Culver’s laboratory and will investigate rootstock and scion molecular signals that contribute to defense induction and developmental phenotypes https://doi.org/10.1111/mpp.13353 . It is anticipated that results from this study will have broad implications toward understanding desirable graft induced traits as well as developing strategies to engineer theses induced phenotypes into new economically important crop systems.
Responsibilities:
  • Investigate the role of graft mobile mRNAs in induced disease resistance, determine if scion derived mobile elements contribute to graft induced resistance, examine the ability of identified graft-mobile mRNAs to confer resistance in novel rootstock – scion combinations.
  • Develop bioinformatic workflows for the analysis, visualization and publication of genomic, RNAseq and metabolomic based studies.
  • Assist in the mentoring of graduate, undergraduate and high school students.
  • Present findings at conferences and through publications.

Minimum Qualifications:
Education:
Ph.D. in molecular plant biology/virology or a related field.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
Proven track record of productivity, excellent communication skills and the ability to conduct independent research.
Preferences:
Preferences:
The candidate should have bench experience working in molecular plant biology systems and / or a strong working knowledge of bioinformatics workflows and systems for the analysis of omics data.
