Position Summary/Purpose of Position:
Dr. Yi Ting Huang of the University of Maryland (UMD) and Dr. Roger Levy of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) are seeking to hire a post-doctoral researcher to work on a collaborative initiative funded by the National Science Foundation entitled, Syntactic processing across socioeconomic status: Linking input to comprehension. This project examines how variation in learning environments impacts how children learn and use language.
The project incorporates a wide variety of concepts and methods from multiple fields, including automated speech recognition (for transcribing LENA recordings), Large language models (for measuring context effects on language use), Bayesian models and inference (for implementing the linking hypotheses), methods for working with large corpora (including text normalization, NLP toolkit), and knowledge of cognitive hypotheses about language learning, and broader impacts of language variation across society. The post-doctoral researcher will develop and test computational methods for analyzing caregivers and children communication and relations between learning and processing. The position will be based in Maryland, but theoretical and methodological training will be provided by both PIs through joint discussions and lab meetings and travel to MIT. The post-doc will be part of a rich interdisciplinary community of language scientists (https://languagescience.umd.edu/) and Institute for Advanced Computer Studies (https://www.umiacs.umd.edu/) at Maryland and MIT’s connections to Quest for Intelligence (https://quest.mit.edu/).
