This job posting pertains to a government funded research project on boride and carbide ceramics for Hypersonics applications. The candidate must have a doctoral degree in Materials Science and Engineering or in an allied discipline. A very good proficiency in thermodynamics of materials is essential and familiarity with Thermo-calcTM software package is preferred. The successful candidate will carry out modelling on phase and reaction equilibria in boride and carbide ceramics. The successful candidate will be involved in the synthesis of selected boride and carbide ceramics by arc melting. The successful candidate should have a strong background in characterization of materials using X-ray diffraction, SEM/EBSD and EDS, and IR/Raman spectroscopy. A thorough understanding of powder synthesis, processing and densification methods are essential. This position will begin in 1 November 2024. The appointment is for 12 months but
can be extended depending upon the availability of funding and job performance. Qualified applicants are requested to contact Prof. E. Key Duties:
50 % 1. Thermodynamics modeling of borides and carbides
35 % 2. Characterization of materials
15 % 3. Supervising the characterization laboratories
 What are the expected outcomes: Thermodynamics of phase equilibria in Boride and Carbide Ceramics for Hypersonics Applications.
 How are the key duties performed: By carrying out computer simulations using advanced modeling software and providing guidance to experimental work.

Qualifications


Minimum Education and Experience
Candidate must have a PhD in Material Science and Engineering or allied disciplines. Must have
demonstrated record of using thermodynamics of materials and characterization of materials with FESEM, RAMAN and XRD. Must have experience in high temperature materials.

The knowledge required above is needed as the candidate must be able to immediately being participating in existing research.
Equipment Utilized
The candidate must have prior experience with thermodynamics of materials and modeling, ceramic
processing and characterization.

Statement
This position will report to Professor Haber and Professor Akdo?an. The candidate will carry out advanced thermodynamic modeling of complex boride and carbide ceramics. The candidate will provide guidance to the experimental work based on the said modeling. The candidate will also participate in the experimental work.
