Essential Job Duties

The Post Doc Research Scholar will be part of a collaborative team using molecular, cellular, and –omics approaches to study plant-virus-vector interactions. The position will work with leafhopper and planthopper-borne viruses. Initial work will focus on characterizing the basic biology of the virus-vector interaction and these findings will lead to research aimed at understanding the molecular basis of virus transmission by vectors. The Post Doc Scholar will also mentor and manage undergraduate researchers.

Other Work/Responsibilities

Assisting with maintenance of virus and insect colonies. Training and mentoring other lab members.

Minimum Experience/Education

Ph.D. or equivalent doctorate (e.g., M.D., D.V.M., Sc.D.) in appropriate field awarded no more than five (5) years from initial date of postdoctoral appointment.

Departmental Required Skills
  • Ph.D. in Entomology, Plant Pathology, or related field.
  • Demonstrated experience with experimental design and statistical analysis, molecular biology, protein biochemistry, handling insects or plant viruses, and bioinformatics.
  • Independent researcher with excellent scientific and writing skills.
  • Mentoring experience or a desire to mentor undergraduate researchers is an important component of this position.
Preferred Experience, Skills, Training/Education
  • Ph.D. in Entomology, Plant Pathology, or related field, with an emphasis in Plant Virology/Vector Interactions.
  • Experience with insect transmission of plant viruses and insect cell culture.
  • Demonstrated experience with analysis of next-generation sequencing.
  • Experience with confocal microscopy of insect and/or plant tissue.
