Position Summary/Description:


The laboratory of Dr. Samuel M Young, Jr is looking for a motivated Postdoctoral Research Associates to join our basic and translational research team in the UNC Gene Therapy Center My research is focuses on two general areas: 1) Molecular principles of auditory information processing, and 2) Gene Therapy approaches to treat neurological disorders. Regarding our auditory focus, we seek to understand how the molecular machinery in auditory brainstem synapses enables neuronal computations at some of the fastest speeds in the central nervous system to enable the ability to identify and interpret sound information received by the ears. Regarding our gene therapy approaches, we seek to develop novel viral vector technology to create novel therapeutic strategies to treat neuronal dysfunction and degeneration to improve the quality of life of individuals who suffer from neurological diseases. To address these research areas, the laboratory employs a multi-disciplinary strategy that encompasses, molecular biology, virology, viral vectors, biophysics, light microscopy, electron microscopy, electrophysiology, and transgenic mouse models.
We are looking for candidates with experience in background in one of these areas: proteomics, electrophysiology, microscopy, ion channels, gene therapy, synaptic physiology, biophysics advanced molecular biology, stem cells, virology, hearing sciences, viral vectorology, cerebellar function, neurological disorders or auditory or cerebellar behavior tasks. This is a time limited position, The successful candidate will conduct independent research projects, and also contribute to broad research goals via team collaboration within the Young Lab. The candidate is expected to present scientific findings at scientific meetings and via peer-reviewed publications.

Education and Experience:


The candidate should have previous experience working with lab animal models, cell culture, molecular biology and immunology techniques. Motivation, independence, and excellent interpersonal skills are desirable.
