Job Summary:

The Health Informatics and Data Science lab in the Division of General Internal Medicine at the University of Colorado School of Medicine is seeking to fill a one to two year-long Postdoctoral Fellow position focused on informatics and data science applications to medicine. This is an opportunity to contribute to the development of informatics and data science innovations that will advance the science of medical evidence, processes of care and health outcomes for patients and their significant others.

Primary responsibilities include any or all of the following: 1) participating in the design and build of computer applications (including SMARTonFHIR applications) on topics such as shared decision making, risk score calculators and other high value software and applications, 2) applying large language models to gain information from clinical EHR notes and scientific publications to inform healthcare providers and patients, 3) building and testing clinical decision support tools, and 4) contributing to distributed research network infrastructure and observational data science research.

There will be ample opportunities to support other emerging lines of research in the lab. Opportunities for manuscript preparation, conference submissions, and funding applications will be available. The Postdoctoral Fellow will collaborate closely with Drs. Lisa Schilling, Andrey Soares, and Bill Baumgartner. The position is hybrid (in-person/remote), and the applicant must be available to work on the University of Colorado Anschutz Medical Campus several days a week.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Analyze multiple datasets, including structured and non-structured EHR data, HER and    other data
  • Investigate open-source LLMs
  • Work with our Office of Information Technology to assist with set up secure data environments
  • Coordinate with research assistants working on projects
  • Support IRB applications for new projects
  • Prepare manuscripts for publication
  • Design and Develop SMART on FHIR apps
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams
  • Use and test various API Endpoints
  • Contribute and maintain github, etc.

Work Location:

Hybrid – This role is eligible for a hybrid schedule of 3-4 days per week on campus in Aurora, CO and as needed for in-person meetings.

Qualifications:

Minimum Qualifications:  

Applicants must meet minimum qualifications at the time of hire.  

  • Doctorate degree in a relevant field (computer science, information systems, information science, biostatistics, bioinformatics)
  • Record of first-author publications in peer-reviewed journals
  • Experience with health-related applications. 

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience with observational research and the OHDSI/OMOP ecosystem
  • Experience with HL7 FHIR standard
  • Experience tuning, applying, and evaluating large language models for information extraction, summarization, and other relevant tasks in the biomedical/clinical domain
  • Strong software engineering background with demonstrated experience supporting reproducible science software development best practices such as regression testing, continuous integration, containerization, etc. 

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Knowledge of HIPAA and IRB regulations and ability to maintain patient/client confidentiality
  • Excellent communication and organizational skills
  • Proficient in Python, R, JavaScript languages
  • Proficient in BigQuery, PostgreSQL databases

Anticipated Pay Range:

The starting salary range (or hiring range ) for this position has been established as $56,484 - $68,604, in alignment with current NIH salary range dependent upon years of postdoctoral experience.

The above salary range (or hiring range ) represents the University’s good faith and reasonable estimate of the range of possible compensation at the time of posting. This position is not eligible for overtime compensation unless it is non-exempt.
