Policy Analyst - School of Computer Science - S3D

The Software and Societal Systems Department, in the School of Computer Science is looking to hire a nonpartisan policy analyst for the Center for Informed Democracy and Social-cybersecurity (IDeaS) at Carnegie Mellon University. This position is a fixed term position that is open to fill immediately and will continue through November 2026. The goals of the position are to, 1) translate IDeaS Center research to promote more evidence-informed policy decisions on issues relating to the social-cyber effects of social media and the proliferation of online misinformation and 2) build stronger working relationships between the IDeaS Center and other Knight-affiliated institutions, policymakers, private stakeholders, and civil society.

Your core responsibilities include:

  • Work closely with the Director Dr. Kathleen Carley and members of the IDeaS center to translate research at the Center to stakeholders in local and federal government as well as other policy makers through organized meetings, workshops, conferences, and training opportunities.
  • Helping organize Center related events including the annual IDeaS Conference and at least two policy summits in Washington, DC.
  • Work with Dr. Carley to organize a policy speaker seminar series, and to organize and facilitate an IDeaS policy workshop each year. This includes identification of speakers, creation of advertising material, and briefing booklets.
  • Work with Dr. Carley to write op-eds, articles, and policy papers in the online harms space.
  • Along with Prof. Carley, draft presentations and other materials for events, meetings, and briefings with policy stakeholders.
  • Along with Prof. Carley, prepare and submit a yearly report to the sponsors.
  • Look for opportunities with local and federal policy stakeholders to share and highlight IDeaS research and initiatives.
  • Provide policy feedback on IDeaS student research.

Qualifications

  • Must have at least an undergraduate degree in a policy related field; however, a master's degree is preferred.
  • Must have at least 3 years work experience in the policy field.
  • Candidates will need to meet in person for meetings in Pittsburgh and Washington, DC.  Travel to DC will be required.
