The primary purpose of the William and Mary Police Department is to support the greater university community in their core pursuits of teaching, research and public service.

Position Summary
To protect life and property and enforce the laws of the Commonwealth as well as the rules, regulations, policies, and procedures of the College of William and Mary in such a manner as to create an environment conducive to the educational mission of The College of William and Mary.
Conditions of Employment
1. Completion of the Criminal Justice Basic Police Academy or completed within one year of hire.
2. Must be able to pass a comprehensive background investigation which includes reference checks, fingerprinting, and sex offender registry check DMV driving records.
3. Must be able to pass a psychological evaluation, drug screening and medical examination.
4. Ability to successfully complete a specified law enforcement training program within 1 year of hire.
5. Ability to perform essential physical requirements of the job to include during inclement weather conditions
6. Rotating shifts with holidays and weekends duty will be required.
7. This is a non-exempt position, eligible to receive overtime in accordance with the Fair Labor Standards Act. This position may be subject to overtime during high peak times, etc. as directed and approved by the supervisor.

Required Qualifications
Required for Police Officer I:
  • Education or Training: High School graduate or equivalent.
  • Ability to successfully complete a specified law enforcement training program within 1 year of hire.
  • Valid Division of Motor Vehicles operator’s license.
  • Ability to obtain and maintain certification in CPR and First Aid.
  • Must be 21 years of age and a U.S. Citizen.

Required for Police Officer II: (the above plus)
  • Completion of the Criminal Justice Basic Police Academy.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Associate degree or higher in criminal justice or related discipline.
  • Current Virginia law enforcement certification or law enforcement certification from another state.
  • Prior employment with a campus law enforcement agency.
