Position Overview
The Lionel Hampton School of Music, at the University of Idaho, invites applications for a full-time Piano Technician. This position will provide specialized technical services to maintain and repair all pianos and harpsichords (approximately 70) used by the Lionel Hampton School of Music. They will manage the piano and harpsichord inventory including inventory location, recommendations for purchase and disposal, scheduling and performance of required maintenance and repairs, education regarding inventory safekeeping and proper usage. They will create and monitor budget expense lines for materials, supplies, repairs and maintenance including use of outside contractors for major rebuilding efforts.

Position Qualifications


Required Experience
  • Certificate in piano technology or three (3) years work experience/apprenticeship in piano technology;
  • Experience in the tuning, repair and maintenance of pianos (except case refinishing);
  • Experience in the repair and maintenance of concert grand pianos, with special emphasis in concert level voicing;

Required Education
  • High School Diploma or equivalent.
Required Other
  • Events throughout the calendar year will have this position working outside normal business hours
Additional Preferred
  • Bachelor’s Degree;
  • Additional work experience, preferably in a university environment;
  • Membership in the Piano Technician’s Guild with the status of Registered Piano Technician (RPT);
  • Effective communication and interpersonal skills;
  • Knowledge of tuning and maintenance of harpsichords;
  • Ability to assess priorities for acquisition and maintenance of pianos;
  • Evidence of basic piano playing skills;
  • Experience in action rebuilding.
  • Knowledge of action regulation for both upright and grand pianos;
Physical Requirements & Working Conditions
  • Ability to lift and/or otherwise move up to 65 pounds in a routine, repetitive manner as needed
  • Ability to bend, stoop, twist, walk on a routine basis throughout the workday
