Physics Shop Technical Trainer

The Department of Physics at The Grainger College of Engineering seeks applicants for a part-time Physics Shop Technical Trainer. This position will be responsible for training students in the use of the Physics Machine Shop equipment through a standard course curriculum in manufacturing multiple mechanical parts and assemblies. They will advise students who have completed instruction after given access to shop facilities for mechanical work and support shop work as availability allows.
Duties and Responsibilities:
Train students in the use of the following:

  • Vertical Milling machining and work holding.
  • Drill press operation.
  • Precision lathe operations and tooling, live centers and collet operations.
  • Production machining and work in the production shop.
  • Fundamentals of metal cutting, shaping, profile cutting.
  • Precision measuring tools use and function.
  • Feed and speed determination for tooling and cutting.

Train students in safety equipment function and use.
  • Tool guarding, hand tool safety, machine cleaning and upkeep.

Train Students in brazing and use of Oxy/Acetylene torch use.
Work with physics shop customers with intake of jobs for the professional shop.
  • Advise customers on design details and material selection when needed.
  • Input professional shop jobs into the data entry system.
  • Assist with professional shop projects when training sessions are not underway.

Document work and training time, maintain stock and tooling. Clean machinery and maintain equipment.
Other duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications:
  • Bachelor's degree in Science or related field
  • Demonstrated experience in machine shop operations and tooling. Previous experience with brazing operations and use of welders, torches and soldering equipment.
  • 1-year experience training a students with wide experience levels while maintaining a safe work space.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

Applicant must be able to explain machine shop operations in a clear manner and be able to instruct and advise students as they move through operations on a wide variety of equipment. Must be able to follow safety regulations, documentation requirements and follow all shop procedures. Should be able to develop alternative curriculum items or expand upon existing training course sections as needed.
Appointment Information
The Physics Shop Technical Trainer position is a 75% full-time equivalent (FTE), benefits-eligible Academic Professional position appointed on a 12-month service basis. FTE may increase at a later date based on duties and/or funding availability. The expected start date is as soon as possible after the closing date. Applicants may be interviewed before the closing date; however, no hiring decision will be made until after that date. The minimum salary is $40,560, commensurate with experience and qualifications. Employees hired into this position will be expected to work onsite on a regular-time basis.
