Physics Laboratory Instructional Support Specialist

Job Summary:

Reporting to the Physics Department Chair, and working closely with the departmental faculty associated with the introductory & advanced lab courses, the Laboratory Instructional Support Specialist's primary responsibility is to teach up to 4 lab sections in each of the Fall and Spring terms, as well as to assist with regular maintenance of the lab facilities & equipment.

Job Description:

1. In-lab teaching of up to 3 Intro [Fall: PHYS 2001; Spring:2002] and 1 Adv. [Fall: PHYS 3001; Spring: PHYS 3086] lab section each semester.

  • This includes giving pre-lab lectures, demonstrating proper use of equipment & instruments, arriving at lab 30 minutes prior to the start of lab and staying 30 minutes after the end of lab to help with lab maintenance activities.
  • Note that a "lab section" typically has 12-15 students, but for PHYS 3086, this could mean teaching two half-sized sections a week, depending on the nature of the experiments.

2. Teaching-related duties during the academic year:

  • Regular office hours (ideally one h/section/wk, but at least two h/wk)
  • Preparation/knowledge of experiment and corresponding theory
  • Grading of lab notebooks for each section taught

3. Attend and participate in meetings with the Physics Faculty, Lab Director, & Departmental Assistant.

4. Assist the Lab Director with routine/regular maintenance/replacement of departmental instruments, equipment, and computers.

  • As regards the last, maintaining various software packages, including but not limited to: Mathematica, Kaleidagraph, Vernier Lab-Pro.

5. Assist Faculty with the management of all stockrooms, inventories & expendables.

6. During non-academic-year months, to assist faculty members with laboratory use relevant to participation in the Barnard Science Summer Research Institute (SRI) and/or Summer High School programs held at Barnard.

7. During the non-academic months assist with laboratory curriculum development as requested by faculty members (as is reasonable; e.g., updating 1-2 experiments each summer).

Salary Range: $70,000 - $75,000

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:

  • Excellent oral and written communication skills.
  • Organized and detail-oriented.
  • Demonstrated ability to use technology to gather, interpret, analyze and present data.
  • A natural & intuitive ability to gain/demonstrate ownership of experimental apparatus and to instill the same in your students.
  • Familiarity with MS Office suite.

Qualifications:

  • Ph.D. in Physics, Applied Physics, or Astrophysics preferred.
  • At least 2 years of college teaching experience required.

The salary of the finalist selected for this role will be set based on a variety of factors, including but not limited to departmental budgets, qualifications, experience, education, licenses, specialty, and training.
