Physics Laboratory Coordinator – Full time (Teaching and Learning Academic Support 2 – MR07)

Department of Chemistry and Physics

The Physics Laboratory Coordinator teaches introductory physics laboratories and manages the operation of more than 20 laboratory sections each semester in at least 10 different lab courses in Physics and Astronomy.

Duties and Responsibilities:

Introductory Physics Laboratory Instructor

Become familiar with General Physics (1030L, 1040L) and Principles of Physics (2300L, 2310L, 2320L) labs and courses. Overall teaching expectations are 3 lab sections on Introductory Physics each Fall and Spring semesters and 2 lab sections of introductory physics in the summer semester. There may be opportunities for some instruction in upper-level classes, based on experience and background.

Physics Laboratory Coordinator

Works closely with instructors to upgrade and enhance Astronomy and Physics laboratory offerings; interacts with physics and astronomy faculty to obtain proper software, hardware, instrumentation, equipment, and procedures for lab classes; sets up and disassembles the physics laboratory equipment for the scheduled experiments; inventories physics teaching laboratory equipment and keeps in operational status; and supervises Physics and Astronomy laboratory teaching assistants.

Physics Laboratory Manager

Applies scientific, safety, and technical judgment concerning appropriateness of physics faculty purchasing requests, including the appropriate budget source for the purchase; collaborates with Department Administrative Specialist and Department Head concerning purchases and accounts when appropriate; coordinates with lab supervisors to estimate purchasing for academic year; coordinates service, calibration and maintenance of Physics and Observatory equipment with Department Laboratory Manager; assists Department Laboratory Manager with annual department equipment inventory and annual Facilities (Space) inventory; submits Physics and Observatory equipment to surplus or dispose of as needed; and serves on appropriate Departmental Committees and participates in Departmental Meetings.

The ideal candidate will possess the following:

  • Science and technical laboratory skills, college-level science laboratory experience to help understand university equipment and supply needs of faculty.
  • Knowledge of and adherence to best practices for laboratory safety.
  • Computer skills, including word processing, database development and management.
  • Written and oral communication skills.
  • Must possess ability to work well with others, be able to multi-task, and serve the academic mission of the department, rendering service in a collegial manner.
  • Good organizational and bookkeeping skills.

Minimum Qualifications: Bachelor’s degree in related scientific area and three years of professional laboratory experience or at least 18 semester hours of graduate work in science.

Preferred Qualifications: Master’s degree in Physical Science (Astronomy, Physics, Chemistry, or related field); college-level laboratory teaching experience; scientific and technical Laboratory experience which would include familiarity with scientific supplies and equipment and laboratory safety; knowledge of UTC enterprise systems such as Oracle/Genetec/UT Marketplace
