Physician - Assistant or Associate Professor - (230000Q7)
Assistant or Associate Professor (03-317-191): The Department of Radiation Oncology, at the University of Maryland School of Medicine, ranked top 5 in NIH Research funding, is recruiting for Radiation Oncologist at the Assistant / Associate Professor, non-tenure track level. The department provides Radiation Oncology services at several practice settings and is in need of a physician for our academic based practice at the University of Maryland Medical Center in Baltimore. The ideal candidate will have a strong interest in having a career in academic radiation oncology. The primary clinical focus will be in gynecology cancers with secondary focuses on breast and lymphoma/hematologic malignancies. The candidate will have an opportunity to be involved in our newly launched radiopharmaceutical program and be the primary clinician. The candidate would ultimately lead the gynecologic cancer program which has had a consistently growing volume over the last several years. The candidate, once oriented, would lead and direct the gynecologic program from a clinical, research and educational perspective. The Department currently has a team approach for brachytherapy with several other experienced faculty. There are dedicated brachytherapy resources such as a brachytherapy coordinator and medical assistants for procedures. We have a Flexitron HDR unit with numerous types of applicators and the ability to make custom applicators. A unique aspect of the program is also the ability to augment RT with superficial, deep and interstitial hyperthermia.
The Department of Radiation Oncology’s clinical program has 16 physicians inclusive of physician scientist faculty. The main patient care facility at the University of Maryland Medical Center in downtown Baltimore, within the University of Maryland Greenebaum Comprehensive Cancer Center, is close to the main attractions of the Inner Harbor waterfront and professional sports stadiums. We have established practices in 6 locations in Maryland – the University of Maryland Medical Center [UMMC] and Maryland Proton Treatment Center [MPTC] in downtown Baltimore, the Central Maryland Radiation Oncology Center [CMROC] in Columbia, the Tate Cancer Center at the University of Maryland Baltimore Washington Medical Center in Glen Burnie [UM-BWMC], the Kaufman Cancer Center at the University of Maryland Upper Chesapeake Medical Center in Bel Air [UM-UCMC] and the Requard Radiation Oncology Center at the University of Maryland Shore Regional Medical Center in Easton [UM-SRMC]. Our current clinical program has 11 linear accelerators, a research linear accelerator, 5 multi-slice large bore CT simulators, a proton center, a GammaPod, 3 HDR units, an MRI and active programs in Hyperthermia Therapy, Brachytherapy, SRS/SBRT and Radio-embolization. There are several campus-wide shared resources including small-animal imaging CT, PET and MR scanners. There are 11 medical residents.
Our research program is focused on Precision Radiation Oncology [PRO] and is led by our Vice Chair for Research Dr Phuoc Tran. Within this program is the Division of Translational Radiation Science, which was established to accelerate the discovery and clinical implementation of new therapeutic strategies to improve tumor response in clinical radiotherapy, minimize post-radiation therapy complications, and mitigate/treat the life-threatening health effects of a radioactive or nuclear agent. Research within PRO is focused on bridging the gap between novel hypothesis-driven science and contract research services to advance new drugs, medical devices, and therapeutic techniques from preclinical efficacy studies toward clinical trial for radiation oncology and biodefense applications. To this end, PRO has assembled a team of 10 faculty and >30 administrative, technical, and regulatory personnel uniquely equipped to operate at the intersection between basic and translational radiation science.
The Medical Physics team is led by Dr. Amit Sawant Vice Chair of Physics Research, and has 30 medical physics faculty, 23 dosimetrists, 3 residents, and 7 information systems and technology staff. All practice sites are connected via a state-of-the-art telemedicine network facilitating interactions between faculty and staff. Research programs include the development of new treatment planning and delivery techniques, tumor motion management, inter-fraction image guidance strategies and collaborative research. Medical physics research space is co-located with our PRO research to facilitate collaboration and team science.
