The PA is an independent member of the team, taking responsibility for the safe delivery of care for inpatient newborns.

Department Description

UCSF's Intensive Care Nursery (ICN) was founded in 1964 and pioneered fetal surgery and is a 58-bed unit that provides care for critically ill newborns and has the expertise to treat the smallest, sickest and most fragile babies needing surgery for heart, lung, gastrointestinal and other life-threatening conditions. Our neonatal heart program is one of the largest in the country, treating almost 200 newborns with heart disease each year.  The ICN is a Regional Intensive Care Nursery and works with a network of 24 hospitals in Northern California to provide neonatology care.


Required Qualifications

Physician Assistant

  • Minimum one (1) year recent PA work experience in a Level III or Level IV Neonatal Intensive Care Unit or completion of a NICU PA Fellowship.
  •  

Senior Physician Assistant

  • Minimum five (5) years recent PA work experience.
  • Minimum one (1) year recent PA experience with the newborn or infant population, or completion of a NICU PA Fellowship.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Minimum two (2) or more years recent PA work experience in a NICU.
  • Completion of a NICU Fellowship.

License/Certification

  • Must hold an active and current California Physician Assistant License (PA).
  • California driver’s license (CDL) if required for position.   
  • Must hold current national board certification by first day of work and maintain.
  • Must hold an active and transferable DEA license to California and have evidence of transfer by 90th day of clinical practice. (It is the responsibility of the employee to transfer their DEA license to their new place of employment if from out of state, via online DEA portal and provide evidence of transfer).
  • Must have completed an AAPA recognized graduate master’s degree program as a physician assistant.
  • Must have submitted enrollment with CMS Medicare and Medicaid through the credentialing process by first clinical day.
  • Current AHA BLS as minimum requirement.    
  • Current AHA NRP as minimum requirement.

UCSF Medical Center and Campus requires certain healthcare providers to be credentialed. In most cases this is done through its Office of Medical Affairs & Governance (OMAG) prior to the first working day. Credentialing and approval of the Standardized Procedures takes between 60-90 days but can vary.
