JOB DESCRIPTION AND POSITION REQUIREMENTS:

The Physician Assistant Director of Didactic Education and Master Educator supports the Physician Assistant Program and College of Medicine, in Hershey, PA, in fulfillment of its mission, purpose and goals. Provides professional leadership and support, and serves as an educator, role model, mentor, career advisor and facilitator.  Provides program-specific expertise and is actively engaged in relevant department initiatives. Supports University, Campus, and/or departmental goals in order to ensure compliance with programmatic accreditation and/or licensure, internal consistency, and graduate outcomes that meet student learning, workplace and placement expectations. Creates an educational environment which fosters innovation, responsiveness, and accountability. 

This position is a full-time, in-person position, reporting to the PA Program Director and instrumental in the continual assessment, evaluation, and refinement of all aspects of didactic education in accordance with current ARC-PA standards. The Director of Didactic Education will work closely with the Program Director, program faculty, staff and students.

The Director of Didactic Education will also serve as a Master Educator and be allotted one clinical day per week to maintain clinical practice with anticipation of being present on campus at least 3 days per week while classes are in session.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS AND RESPONSIBILITIES: 

Teaching

  • Participates in the design, implementation, coordination, and evaluation of the curriculum.
  • Serve as the Course Director for assigned courses, simulation instruction and curriculum design in the didactic phase of the program.
  • Continuously reviews and updates course materials for lecture and laboratory courses in the didactic phase of the program.
  • Participates in the written and practical assessment of students in the didactic and clinical phases of the program.
  • Participates in the development and implementation of educational activities that enhance active student engagement in learning; including Interprofessional Education Events.
  • Serves as an academic advisor to students from matriculation to graduation.
  • Serves as a Capstone advisor for students in the second year of the PA program.
  • Oversees the comprehensive modular, semester, and didactic summative exam validation processes for the didactic phase of the PA program.
  • Oversees remediation efforts during the didactic phase of the PA program and provides remediation for students with sub-standard performance as needed.
  • Assures students are provided instructional support services within the subject area taught to maintain the highest level of student achievement while safeguarding the integrity of the educational process.
  • Records and posts class attendance and grades as required, completes and submits assignments in a timely manner, responds to urgent student inquiries as described in the student/faculty handbook.
  • Grades tests, quizzes, lab assignments promptly, returning constructive feedback to students within 2 weeks, unless otherwise noted in the course syllabus.

Administrative

  • Assists with program activities to ensure compliance with applicable federal, state and local laws and regulations, accrediting bodies, and University policies and procedures.
  • Assists the PA Program Director in the administration of the didactic phase of the two-year academic program.
  • Oversees curriculum content and integration across the didactic phase of learning to ensure continuity of longitudinal themes, breadth, and depth of instruction.
  • Oversees the integration of technology and other resources to support an effective learning environment.
  • Oversees the utilization of the College’s learning management system and other College/program management platforms used in the didactic phase of the program.
  • Collaborates with the PA Program Director to orient and mentor new didactic principal and instructional faculty into their roles.
  • Reviews and ensures that course syllabi align with program syllabus template requirements.
  • Works with the PA Program Director, Associate Dean for Evaluation and Assessment, and the Manager for Accreditation Monitoring, Database Analysis, and Continuous Quality Improvement to ensure alignment with program competencies across assessment and evaluation processes.
  • Participates in the development, updating and reporting of ongoing self-assessment processes related to didactic education and outcomes as required for program self-assessment and in accordance with ARC-PA standards.
  • Monitors and reports on academic progress for all matriculated PA students in the didactic phase of the program.
  • Recommends budgetary considerations for the didactic phase of the PA program to the PA Program Director.

Scholarship & Service

  • Identifies and applies specialized research or activities related to teaching, assigned teaching area(s), or may contribute to the scholarly community/knowledge of the discipline.
  • Actively participates in the screening, interviewing, and selection of students for enrollment into the PA program as a member of the admissions committee.
  • Attends Department, College and University meetings as arranged/approved by Program Director and Clinical Department Manager.
  • Serves as an academic liaison to the Physician Assistant Master’s Program Education Committee (PAMPEC) and the Competency Progress Committee (CPC).
  • Participate in planned student recruiting, admissions, and retention activities as assigned by the Program Director.
  • Serve as a program representative on college level committees or task forces that assist in the formation of academic policies and related matters, as assigned.

Clinical Practice

  • Maintains clinical practice within designated clinical department.
  • Attends professional development/continuing medical education activities that promote education, leadership, and College/program missions and educational goals.

EDUCATION:

  • Graduation from an ARC-PA accredited PA program.
  • Master’s degree.
  • Current NCCPA certification.
  • Active PA license in Pennsylvania or eligibility for this licensure.  

KNOWLEDGE/EXPERIENCE:

  • Five years of experience in clinical PA practice.
  • Three years of experience in PA education preferred.
  • Experience in administrative programs and accreditation proceedings.
  • Knowledge of/experience with ARC-PA standards preferred.

This is a limited-term non-tenure line position funded for one year from date of hire, with possibility of refunding.
