Scope of Position  

The Physical Therapy Resident is currently licensed to practice physical therapy in the State of Ohio. This individual will work within a team oriented sports medicine rehabilitation program.  These services are offered via outpatient service sites to patients who have disorders and conditions associated primarily with orthopedic and sports related injuries.  The team members report to the rehabilitation manager as part of the OSU Ambulatory Rehab program structure. 

Position Summary  

The Physical Therapy Resident works under the general supervision of the Rehab Manager and under direct supervision of the Manager responsible for coordinating education. The Physical Therapy Resident evaluates and treats patients in accordance with the laws and rules that govern the practice of physical therapy in the state of Ohio. Although team members report directly to a team leader, they are also responsible to each other, staff physical therapists, to those they supervise (rehab assistants and athletic trainers) and to other participants included in the patient care activities.

Duties and Responsibilities  

75% of time - Clinical Practice

Each rehabilitation team member provides services according to:  the laws of the State of Ohio governing licensed professionals; standards of practice, scope of practice, clinical guidelines, and codes of ethics published by respective national professional associations; and OSUMC policies and procedures governing the work of licensed clinical professionals.  All staff must meet standards established by the Rehab. Division as part of the OSUMC performance appraisal system (P3).  Core competencies include customer service, teamwork, job knowledge/skills, and resource management.   These core areas are integral to successful clinical practice.  The Resident will be subject to other clinical performance assessments outlined by the residency curriculum and developed in accordance to the Description of Specialty Practice provided by the American Physical Therapy Association.

Clinical Practice consists of patient/family orientation, evaluations, assessments, observations, treatment procedures, training, interventions, educational sessions, and activity counseling, conducted as part of a team approach or as a single practitioner.  The documentation of patient care and planned progression are integral components of clinical practice.

*Both evaluation and treatment sessions may be conducted in individual sessions with one or more practitioners, in groups of patients with similar or diverse skill levels, or within groupings of patients who focus on individual goals but participate in care within general treatment areas.  Site of care may be the patient care unit, designated team or skill-classified treatment areas (functional and sport specific treatment site or therapeutic exercise areas), other locations within the medical center, or in the community.

*Professionals use a wide variety of approaches to evaluation and treatment, consistent with the individual needs of persons served, their families, and caregivers.  Approaches include:  "salient factors" - those key issues that must be addressed to achieve the established discharge plan; use of clinical pathways, algorithms, and clinical guidelines; use of specific protocols to address component functions or skills established within the Rehabilitation Plan of Care (as applicable to venue of care).  Each practitioner within the patient care team is responsible for assuring a continuity of care among team members.

*Education/training and support sessions are as important as sessions that focus on physical or other specified skills.

*Clinical practice for licensed professionals also includes the supervision of Athletic Trainers, Physical Therapist Assistants, rehabilitation aides and student medical assistants as assigned.  Patient care is delegated in accordance with department policy, which reflects the laws and rules of applicable state practice acts.

*Documentation requirements and format are performed according to policies and procedures established within the Sports Medicine Center and follow the Standards of Practice Guidelines established by the APTA.

*Productivity expectations are established in support of the departments budgeted fiscal responsibility and are defined in the department’s policy and procedure manual.

15% of time - Educational Activities

Educational Activities are those that promote advanced knowledge and skills of the Physical Therapy Resident and include but are not limited to: attending and/or presenting at Journal Club, Fellow Conferences, Grand Rounds; laboratory instruction within the Academic Division of Physical Therapy; participating in a biomechanics research laboratory experience; taking graduate courses within the university; and self-study of current evidence to further sports medicine practice.

5% of time - Team Activities

Team Activities are those that support care of the persons served, including scheduling, daily care planning sessions, family conferences, internal continuing education sessions, team and divisional business meetings. Team members also participate in clinical quality and outcomes management activities.  In addition, team members may have opportunities to participate in medical center committee activities including event coverage and outreach opportunities. Specific requirements and schedules for team activities are established by management personnel in cooperation with team members.

5% of time - Professional Discipline Activities

It is particularly important in an interdisciplinary environment that rehabilitation team members maintain formal links with members of their own profession, having opportunities to pursue discipline-specific continuing education, teach students and other professionals about aspects of practice, participate in research activities, and interact with members of their profession within and outside the medical center.

All team members will establish specific goals and activities that relate to their professional discipline, including inservice education and periodic discipline-specific professional business meetings/conferences both within and outside the medical center.  Some members of the rehabilitation team may have indirect, but specific ties to a central department of the medical center, if applicable.

Organizational Expectations  

Practices within the Medical Center's policies and procedures.  Adheres to the Intensive Caring Value statements as demonstrated through positive patient/guest relations, positive and effective interactions with staff, and formulating and meeting developmental goals.

Minimum Qualifications

For Hire:  All Physical Therapy Residents must hold current licensure with the State of Ohio Occupational Therapy, Physical Therapy and Athletic Training Board. 

On going:  Maintains professional licensure; demonstrates commitment to continuing education; meets mandatory education and health requirements; demonstrates competence in technical, interpersonal, and cognitive skills required to meet essential job functions.

Knowledge of growth and development and an understanding of the range of treatments necessary to meet the age specific needs of the patient population served (Check those that apply):
